GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Jess Troutman went 4-for-8 with two RBI and two-time Centennial Conference (CC) Pitcher of the Year Lisa Newmaster picked up a win and a save as 16th-ranked Ursinus swept a key doubleheader from Gettysburg, 2-1 and 3-2, in CC softball action on Monday.
Troutman also scored the winning run in both contests for the Bears (31-8, 10-2 CC), who jumped ahead of the Bullets (18-3, 9-3 CC) in the conference standings and into a first-place tie with Western Maryland and Muhlenberg.
Jen White and Karyn Miller each collected three hits on the afternoon for Gettysburg, which dropped back-to-back games for the first time all season. Mandy Wilson added a pair of hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases for the Bullets.
In game one, Ursinus needed only five batters to score all the runs it would need. Courtney Quinones singled on the first pitch of the game and scored on a double to left by Troutman. Gettysburg starter Courtney Todd fanned the next two Bears, but Sue Sobolewski tripled to deep right with two outs to knock in Troutman for a 2-0 lead. The two earned runs were the first allowed by Todd in 61 innings pitched this season.
Gettysburg pulled within 2-1 in the sixth inning when Wilson ripped a leadoff single and scored on a triple from Miller. The Bullets seemed poised to tie the game, but Ursinus leftfielder Jenn Prendiville threw out Miller at home plate on a fly out by Megan Wargo for a double play that ended the threat.
Newmaster stranded Gettysburg runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings to pick up her team-high 14th victory of the year. She scattered eight hits and allowed one run while striking out six against no walks.
Todd fell to 8-2 on the season, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
In the second game, Ursinus plated three unearned runs on two Bullet errors to complete the sweep.
With the Bears down 2-1 and two outs in the fifth inning, Quinones reached on a throwing error, Troutman singled and Kara Johnson dumped a base hit into leftfield to tie the game at 2-2.
After Sobolewski walked to load the bases, Prendiville singled up the middle to drive in Troutman with the go-ahead run.
Denise Bozenski held the Bullets to two runs on three hits before giving way to Newmaster with one out in the sixth inning. Newmaster retired all five batters she faced to pick up the save.
Gettysburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when White tripled down the rightfield line and scored in Wilson's ground out.
Ursinus tied it in the third when Bozenski reached on an error and scored on a two-out single from Troutman.
Wargo plated Wilson with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to put the Bullets back on top 2-1 without the benefit of a base hit.
Sarah Stokes started game two for the Bullets, allowing one unearned run on three hits over four innings. Stef Mastropaolo went 2-for-3 with a triple in the first game for Gettysburg.
The Bullets return to action on Tuesday, April 25 with a doubleheader at Elizabethtown College. The first game begins at 3:30 p.m.
