GETTYSBURG FORGES COSTLY DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT WITH SWARTHMORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. --- Gettysburg pounded out 13 hits to capture game one of its doubleheader with Swarthmore 15-1, but the Garnet scored three runs in the sixth inning of game two to win the nightcap 4-3 in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action.

The second-game loss moved the Bullets (19-4, 10-4 CC) to the brink of elimination in the CC championship race.  Gettysburg would be knocked out of contention for the conference crown if Muhlenberg wins at least one of its two games against Washington on Thursday.

Megan Wargo (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) went 2-for-5 with a double and five RBI in the game-one win as every member of the Bullet starting lineup collected at least one hit.  Emily Boardman went 3-for-4 with three RBI in game one while Mandy Wilson added two hits and scored three runs.  Karyn Miller went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the second game.

In game one, the Bullets fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but took a 3-1 lead in the second keyed by Boardman's two-out, two-run single.  Wargo drove in two runs with a single in the third to make it 5-1 before Gettysburg exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the fourth frame to put the game away.

Melissa Hazzard allowed one run on six hits in game one while striking out two to pick up her fourth win of the season for the Bullets.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning of game two, Swarthmore struck for three runs when Portia Kelly ripped a bases-loaded, two-out double on a 3-2 pitch to plate three runs and help the Garnet (4-21, 2-12 CC) to only their fourth win of the season.

The Bullets took a 2-0 lead when Miller singled home Boardman and Wilson with two outs in the third inning.  Swarthmore cut the lead in half with a run in the third, but Gettysburg restored its two-run cushion in the fifth when Miller ripped a one-out double and scored on a two-bagger by Casey Stevens.

Jen White knocked in a pair of runs in the opener for Gettysburg while Jody Noel (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic), Stef Mastropaolo and Stevens each collected an RBI in the first game.

Gettysburg wraps up its regular season on Saturday, April 29 with a CC doubleheader at Western Maryland College.  The first game begins at 1 p.m.
