LANCASTER, Pa. --- Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Canterbury [CT]) set career highs with six goals, four assists and 10 points as Gettysburg sealed their third straight Centennial Conference (CC) title with a 17-8 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
Gettysburg also locked up its tenth straight berth into the NCAA tournament.
Senior attackman Ross Garretson (New Hope, PA/Germantown Academy) collected a hat trick and two assists while Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) and Mark Pollak (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) each collected a pair of goals en route to the Bullets (12-1, 6-0 CC) 22nd straight conference win.
Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]), Charlie Hanchett (Annapolis, MD/Stony Brook School), Christian Cronin (Olney, MD/Georgetown Prep.) and Adam Aiello (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) each scored one goal in the winning performance.
Peter Burgess and Bryan Nolan each scored hat tricks for Franklin & Marshall (4-10, 3-3 CC). Beau Smith and Jon Singer chipped in with one goal each in the losing effort while goalie David Kahn made 15 saves.
The Bullets opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal from Milliman at 11:34 and another at 5:05 to stake the 2-0 lead. With the extra man advantage, Pearce pushed the Gettysburg lead to 3-0 with 2:59 left in the quarter, but the Diplomats stunned the visitors with goals 25 seconds apart to end the quarter down three to two.
The Bullets quickly extended their lead when Garretson netted a pass from Milliman, and Hanchett capitalized on another extra man opportunity to push their advantage to 5-2. F&M, however, regained a goal when Burgess returned for his second goal of the contest at 6:04 left to pull within 5-3.
Gettysburg sank its sixth of the day when Pearce connected off an assist from Garretson, but the Diplomats sank their fourth with the extra man to pull within 6-4. The Bullets would have the last say of the half when Milliman made his second assist of the day, feeding Cronin's run on the net with 1:01 left.
Gettysburg took control of the game by outscoring the Diplomats 5-2 in the third quarter.
When play resumed, Milliman would assist Garretson for the second time in the contest, only to have the Diplomats sink one of their own 32 seconds later. Gettysburg would once again look to Milliman when the sophomore ace netted his third of the contest at the 11:03 mark, pushing the Bullet lead to 9-5. Pollak expanded the Bullet breathing room by two more points, sinking back-to-back unassisted goals at the 8:10 and 3:14 marks.
Nolan broke the Gettysburg run with his second goal of the game off a feed from Smith at 2:06, only to have the Bullets cap the quarter with a goal from Bremer at 1:54. Gettysburg continued to extend their lead in the final quarter, seeing Milliman collect the last three Bullet tallies.
Gettysburg outshot Franklin & Marshall 49-28 on the afternoon and held a 44-26 advantage in ground balls. The Bullets converted on four of seven extra-man opportunities against the Diplomats.
Gettysburg, currently ranked second in Division III, returns to action on Wednesday, May 3 at home against Messiah. Game time is 4 p.m.
