GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Canterbury [CT]) collected five goals and three assists for a career-high eight points to lead second-ranked Gettysburg past Haverford 20-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Milliman tallied half of his points on two goals and two assists in the game's first 6:47 to stake the Bullets (7-1, 1-0 CC) to a 5-0 lead. Fellow attackmen Ross Garretson (New Hope, PA/Germantown Acad.) and Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay) [NY]) added four goals and one assist apiece to help Gettysburg improve to 16-0 all-time against the Fords (3-4, 0-1 CC) while winning its 17th straight conference game.
Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) chipped in with a team-high three assists in the win while teammates Kevin Callahan (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Inst.) and Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) each collected a goal and two assists. Andrew Barter (N. Brookfield, MA/Tabor Acad.) and Eric Gregg (Narberth, PA/Episcopal Acad.) combined for eight saves in the Gettysburg net.
Chris Anderson, the conference's second-leading goal scorer, tallied all four goals for Haverford while Tim Keating picked up a pair of assists. Fords' goalie Matt Montgomery made 15 saves in 45 minutes of action while facing 48 of Gettysburg's season-high 58 shots.
Coming off its first loss of the season to No. 1 Salisbury St. on Saturday, Gettysburg took little time in re-establishing its offensive attack. Milliman scored an unassisted goal 1:26 into the contest, then set up Callahan less than two minutes later to make it 2-0 Bullets with 11:52 left in the first period. Milliman struck again 48 seconds later off a feed from Twombly and Bremer scored off a pass from Pearce 58 seconds after that to push the Gettysburg lead to 4-0.
Bremer capped the run with his second goal of the game off a feed from Milliman to make it 5-0 at the 8:13 mark of the first period.
Anderson put Haverford on the scoreboard with an extra-man goal at 1:17 of the period to cut the lead to 5-1. Defensively, Montgomery kept the Fords within striking distance by stopping nine of Gettysburg's 20 first-period shots.
Pearce set up Garretson's first goal of the game to make it 6-1 Bullets with 13:34 left in the half. Anderson responded one minute and 58 seconds later with his second goal of the game to pull the Fords within 6-2, but Gettysburg closed out the half on a 5-0 run to take an 11-2 advantage into the locker room. Milliman scored two more goals and Bremer and Garretson each added one goal and one assists each during the run.
The Bullets scored all six goals in the third quarter to take a 17-2 lead. Jason Carney (Timonium, MD/Boys' Latin School) scored his first goal of the season in the fourth quarter while freshman Chris Porter (Fallston, MD/John Carroll School) closed out the scoring with his first collegiate goal with 2:27 left in the game.
Gettysburg outshot the Fords 58-25 on the afternoon and held a 37-25 advantage in ground balls. The Bullets' 20-goal output tied a season high, set in their 20-8 win at Drew on March 4.
Gettysburg, currently ranked second in Division III, returns to action on Saturday, April 8 at home against Western Maryland College. Game time is 1 p.m.
