GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Karyn Miller (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) singled home the go-ahead run in game one and tripled in the game-tying run in the nightcap to help Gettysburg sweep Messiah, 4-0 and 3-2, in non-conference softball action on Thursday.
Courtney Todd fired her third shutout of the season in the first game to help the Bullets (12-1) break an eight-game losing streak to the Falcons, an NCAA Division III College World Series participant in 1999. Todd has not allowed an earned run in 36 innings pitched this season.
Megan Wargo (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) singled home Jody Noel (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic) with the game-winning run in the fifth inning of game two and also picked up an RBI in the opener. Sarah Stokes earned the game-two victory, allowing two runs on four hits over five-plus innings to improve to 5-0. Melissa Hazzard got the final six outs of the second game to earn her second save of the season.
Michal Chaffinch went 2-for-3 for Messiah in game one while Courtney Hockenberry drove in both Falcon runs in game two.
In game one, Gettysburg scored the only run it would need in its first at-bat. Jenna Pabst walked to lead off the game and moved to second on a passed ball. Mandy Wilson moved Pabst to third with a ground out and Miller followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0 Bullets.
Gettysburg again took advantage of walks to score three times in the third inning. Wilson and Miller drew one-out walks off of losing pitcher Kathryn Murk ahead of an RBI single from Wargo that made it 2-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Casey Stevens delivered a two-run single that plated Miller and Wargo for a 4-0 Gettysburg lead.
Todd allowed singles in five of her seven innings pitched, but never let a Messiah runner past second base en route to her fifth victory of the season.
In game two, the Bullets erased a 2-1 deficit to take the lead for good in the fifth inning. Jen White drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Wilson sacrifice. Miller followed with a soaring triple to left field that plated White with the tying run. Wargo wasted little time giving the Bullets a 3-2 edge, driving a single to left past a drawn-in infield to bring home pinch-runner Noel with the winning run.
Hazzard closed out the sweep by retiring all five batters she faced in the sixth and seventh innings. Emily Boardman went 3-for-6 with one RBI on the afternoon to key the Bullet offense.
Gettysburg, ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic region, returns to action on Saturday, April 8 with a doubleheader at Haverford College. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
