HAVERFORD, Pa. --- Courtney Todd fired a three-hit shutout and Melissa Hazzard tossed a two-hit complete game to help Gettysburg sweep Haverford, 4-0 and 7-1, in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.
Todd allowed no runs on three hits while striking out four in the opener to improve to 6-1. The sophomore righty has yet to allow an earned run in 40 innings pitched this season. Hazzard matched Todd's performance in game two, holding the Fords (5-16, 0-4 CC) to one unearned run on two hits while striking out four against no walks for her third win of the year.
Mandy Wilson went 5-for-6 with five runs scored and two doubles on the afternoon as the Bullets (14-1, 5-1 CC) continued their best start since 1985. Megan Wargo (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) added five hits and three RBI while Karyn Miller (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI in the second game.
In game one, Wargo gave the Bullets a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run double that plated Wilson and Miller. Gettysburg added insurance in the seventh inning when Miller drove in Jenna Pabst on a fielder's choice and Wargo knocked in Wilson with her second hit of the game to make it 4-0.
Haverford's best chance to score came in the first inning. The Fords put runners on second and third with two outs, but Todd worked out of that jam, then allowed only a pair of singles over the final six innings to lock up the win.
In the second game, the Bullets took a 3-0 lead with single runs in each of the first three innings. Miller doubled home Wilson in the first and third innings while Emily Boardman knocked in Stef Mastropaolo with an RBI single in the second frame for Gettysburg's second run. Miller then capped a four-run outburst in the sixth inning with her third two-bagger of the game, scoring Pabst and Wilson to give the Bullets a 7-1 lead.
Haverford pushed across its only run of the day in the fourth inning when Sasha Brady reached second on a single and throwing error, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice by Sarah Chamovitz. Allison Hicks, who pitched all 14 innings and took both losses for the Fords, managed her squad's only other hit against Hazzard, a single in the third inning.
Pabst went 2-for-4 with one run scored in the first game for Gettysburg while Boardman rapped out a pair of hits in game two. Following the strong outings by Todd and Hazzard, the Bullets have allowed a total of 13 runs in 15 games this season.
Gettysburg, currently ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic region, returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 with a doubleheader at home against Dickinson College. The first game begins at 3:30 p.m.
