GETTYSBURGS SEASON ENDS WITH 12-10 LOSS TO WASHINGTON & LEE IN NCAA QUARTERFINALS

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Colin Dougherty scored a team-high six points as fourth-ranked Washington & Lee used a 4-0 burst in the fourth period to break an 8-all tie and defeat Gettysburg 12-10 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament on Saturday at Musselman Stadium.

Dougherty fed Tom Burke with 12:28 left in the game to put the Generals ahead to stay at 9-8.  Matt Dugan then scored twice in a span of 44 seconds to push the lead to 11-8 and help Washington & Lee (16-1) win its program-record 16th game while avenging its only loss of the 2000 campaign.  Gettysburg downed W&L 6-4 back on March 12.

Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Canterbury [CT]) tallied two goals and two assists for Gettysburg, which saw its season end in the NCAA quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.  Ross Garretson (New Hope, PA/Germantown Academy) added a hat trick for the Bullets (14-2) while Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) scored a pair of goals in the loss.

Washington & Lee advances to face top-ranked Salisbury St. in the national semifinals next weekend.  The Sea Gulls avenged their only loss of the 2000 regular season with a 21-9 romp over Washington (Md.) on Sunday.

In a game that was tied at the end of each of the first three periods, the Generals punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 4-0 run over a span of seven minutes and 42 seconds in the fourth quarter.

Dougherty got the ball off a scramble behind the net and fed Burke, who rifled a shot past Gettysburg goalie Andrew Barter (N. Brookfield, MA/Tabor Acad.) for a 9-8 lead with 12:28 remaining.

Washington & Lee pushed its lead to 10-8 off another key ground ball pickup, this time at the top of the attack zone.  Bernie Norton, who finished with a goal and three assists, ended up with the ball off the broken play and fed Dugan, who beat Barter with 6:28 left.

Less than one minute later, Norton set up Dugan again for an 11-8 Washington & Lee advantage.  Following a roughing penalty on Gettysburg's Matt McMillen (Media, PA/Penncrest), the Generals took control of the game with an extra-man tally by Will Sharp at the 4:46 mark of the fourth period for a 12-8 lead.  Dougherty picked up his fourth and final assist of the afternoon on the play.

The Bullets responded with an unassisted goal from Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest School [VA]) with 4:10 to play to pull within 12-9.  Washington & Lee, however, clamped down on defense and was able to hold Gettysburg off the scoreboard until Garretson completed his hat trick with 10 seconds left to set the final margin.

Washington & Lee jumped to a 3-1 lead at the 6:56 mark of the first period, before Garretson and Bremer struck 42 seconds apart to pull the Bullets even at 3-3 after one quarter.

Matt Twombly's (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) goal from Mark Pollak (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) at the 10:23 mark of the second period gave Gettysburg its first lead at 4-3.  Dugan and Dougherty sandwiched goals around a tally from Milliman to tie the game 5-5 at the half.

Bremer gave Gettysburg its last lead of the game at 6-5 with the first goal of the second half off a ground ball pick-up and quick pass from Milliman at 12:30.

Goals from Norton, Dugan and Chris Brown put the Generals ahead 8-6 with 6:06 left in the third, but Milliman scored on Gettysburg's only extra-man opportunity of the game at 5:04 to get the Bullets back within one at 8-7.  Kevin Callahan (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Inst.) evened the score at eight with an end-to-end dash that resulted in a goal with six seconds left in the period.

W&L goalie Wes Hays made 12 saves on the afternoon while Barter came up with eight stops for Gettysburg.  The Generals held a 39-38 edge in shots for the game and also posted a 45-34 edge in ground balls.  The Bullet faceoff tandem of Jason Carlstrom (Far Hills, NJ/West Morris Mendham) and John Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) more than held its own against W&L faceoff specialist Thomas Melanson, winning 15 of 25 draws on the afternoon.
