GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Jeremy Shapiro (Leonia, NJ/Fieldston School) scored his third gamewinner of the season 1:30 into the second overtime period to lift Gettysburg College past Washington College 2-1 in both teams' Centennial Conference opener on Saturday. With the win the Bullets' record improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
In a match characterized by physical play, it would take almost the entire first half before the ball found the net. Gettysburg struck first as freshman Frank Ianni (Westfield, NJWestfield) received a pass at the penalty mark from Shapiro and slotted it to the far post at the 41:39 mark.
In the second half Washington would look to a freshman of their own, Geoff Foltyn, to tally the equalizer. Foltyn took advantage of miscommunication by the Gettysburg defense and put the tying goal into the corner at 70:30.
The score remained locked at 1-1 through the remainder of regulation time and the first fifteen minute over time period, but Gettysburg would seal the win in the 106th minute of play when Shapiro beat two men and slotted the golden goal 1:30 into the second overtime period.
The Bullets outshot the Shoremen 26-15 and held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, September 20 at home against York. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
