FROSTBURG, Md. – For the third time in his career, Jeremy Shapiro tallied a pair of goals as ninth-ranked Gettysburg blanked Frostburg State 3-0 in the 2000 season opener for both teams on Saturday.
Clayton Krum also picked up a goal in the contest when he buried a cross from Mike Bevilaqua. Bullet goalkeeper Nick LaPorta made four stops while seeing 90 minutes between the posts.
After 30 minutes of scoreless soccer Shapiro started the Gettysburg scoring onslaught when he slotted a penalty shot at the 31:39 mark. He would return to push the lead to two when he buried a shot from the 18-yard line 52 seconds into the second half. After repeated attempts at the goal, including several off the post and wide, Krum would ice the win with his ninth collegiate goal from Bevilaqua's first collegiate assist.
Gettysburg outshot the Bobcats 15-5 while Frostburg held the edge in corner kicks 11-4.
The Bullets, currently ranked 9th in Division III, return to action on Tuesday, September 5 when they host Susquehanna University. Game time is 4 p.m.
