ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Maureen O'Donnell (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute as Gettysburg used two restart goals in a five-minute, 30-second stretch of the second half to defeat Elizabethtown 3-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday.
O'Donnell received the opportunity to net her first goal of the 2000 season when Blue Jay goalie Lisa Blanker fouled Gettysburg's Ashley Froman (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) inside the penalty box with 6:42 remaining in regulation time. The Bullet junior slotted her shot to the right of a diving Blanker to give the visitors their first lead of the day at 3-2.
Gettysburg survived a number of anxious moments following the go-ahead goal to notch its first victory over Elizabethtown in the last three meetings between the teams.
Bullet goalie Carine Doyle (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), who made a career-high 11 saves on the afternoon, smothered a serve following a cleared corner kick in the 86th minute that barely eluded Blue Jay forward Andrea Thompson. Two minutes later, E-town's Denise Gordon was sent in on a semi-breakaway, but fired a left-footed shot wide of the left post.
Gettysburg took advantage of a strange set of events to tie the game at two.
Blanker was shaken up in a collision with two Bullet players in the 78th minute and forced by rule to temporarily leave the playing field. With Blanker waiting on the sidelines to re-enter the game seconds later, O'Donnell was fouled at the top of the box and Kay McGlaughlin (Floral Park, NY/St. Mary's) rifled the ensuing free kick off the hands of backup goalie Anna Daciw and into the net for the tying goal.
Elizabethtown's Eileen Fretz had given the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute, when she was sent in alone on a misplayed ball and fired the go-ahead shot past a diving Doyle. Fretz led all players with five of E-town's 19 shots on the day.
The two teams traded goals within 1:22 of each other late in the first half to open the scoring.
Nicole Hundley volleyed home a pass from Christy Callahan to give the Blue Jays a short-lived 1-0 lead at 32:38.
One minute, 22 seconds later, Lauren Melillo (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) set up the first collegiate goal by Kristen Salmond (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) to tie the game at one.
Rachael Rzemieniewski (Neshanic, NJ/Immaculata) led the Bullets with three shots on the day, including a point-blank blast that was denied by Blanker in the 17th minute. Thompson added three shots for E-town. Blanker finished with six saves for the Blue Jays.
In defeating Elizabethtown for the ninth time in their 13 all-time meetings, the Bullets extended their winning streak to four games. The five total goals scored in the game represented the highest single-game goal total in the annual series since a 3-2 Gettysburg win in 1995.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, September 23 at Washington (Md.) College. Game time is 1 p.m.
