GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Liam McDevitt (Norwell, MA/Thayer Academy) netted the gamewinner late in Gettysburg's non-conference match-up with York (Pa.) College to push the Bullets to the 2-1 victory. With the win the Bullets' overall record improves to 5-2 overall.
Amidst play that yo-yoed from one 18-yard box to the other, Gettysburg's leading goal scorer Jeremy Shapiro (Leonia, NJ/Fieldston School) tallied his seventh goal of 2000 to give the home team the 1-0 advantage 11 minutes into the contest. The goal also tied Shapiro's personal record for goals in a season, set in 1999.
It would take the Spartans over thirty minutes of offensive effort, but at 41:27 Jeremy Klunk netted the equalizer off a pass from Aaron McKinley, locking the score at 1-1 to end the half.
In the second half York doubled their shot output, but it would be Gettysburg that found the net. McDevitt received a well-placed pass through the defense, took the goalkeeper one-on-one and wove his second collegiate goal into the side netting with 7 minutes left to play.
Gettysburg goalie Nick LaPorta (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) notched four saves while Greg Fry tallied two between the pipes for the Spartans.
The Bullets outshot the York 14-13 and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, September 23 at Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg. Game time is 4 p.m.
