GETTYSBURG, Pa. - For the sixth straight year, Gettysburg College blanked Western Maryland College in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action, downing the Green Terror 2-0 on Wednesday. With the victory, the Bullets' record improves to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in CC play.
After 64 minutes of offensive effort, Gettysburg defender Wes Thurmond (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) took advantage of a weak clear by the Green Terror and buried the game-winner in the near post. The goal was the fourth in his career and first of the 2000 season.
Seizing the momentum, the Bullets looked to their leading scorer Jeremy Shapiro (Leonia, NJ/Fieldston School) 1:43 later to cushion the win. Shapiro received the ball at midfield from J.W. Havens (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) and, after weaving his way through the defense, lofted the ball over goalie Ryan Defibaugh and into the far netting. The goal was his eighth of the 2000 season, surpassing his previous career best of seven goals in a season, set in 1999.
Gettysburg outshot the Green Terror 18-2 and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, September 30 at home against Eastern College. Game time is 1 p.m.
