GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Emily McAuliffe (Lowville, NY/Lowville Academy) scored the lone Bullet goal as Gettysburg and Muhlenberg battled to a 1-1 draw in Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer action on Thursday. The tie notches both teams' CC record at 3-0-1 and extends Gettysburg's conference unbeaten streak to 23 games.
The Bullets would find the net first and early as McAuliffe received a long serve on the right side from Nicole DeSantis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and sliced it past onrushing Mule keeper Kim Laurino at the 17:23 mark. Laurino, who tallied eight saves on the afternoon, would return later to record several spectacular saves late in the match.
The score remained 1-0 in Gettysburg's favor through the remainder of the first half, but it would take the visitors only five minutes into the second half to find the equalizer. On the first corner kick of the contest, Alissa Desiderio served the ball to the far right where Pamela Campbell connected for her first goal of the 2000 campaign.
Using the momentum, the Mules quickly resumed their attack on goal. In the 53rd minute, Nancy Grove received a ball inside the box and fired on the net at point blank range only to have Bullet keeper Carine Doyle (Exton, PABishop Shanahan) come up big for Gettysburg between the posts. Doyle was credited with six often dramatic saves on the afternoon.
In the 55th minute Desiderio had a penalty kick opportunity, but the ensuing shot sailed high over the crossbar. In the 61st minute Muhlenberg's leading scorer Dawn Iberer rocked a shot off the left post, and then in the 69th minute Doyle again came up big for the Bullets, stopping a Desiderio free kick from the top of the box.
As regulation waned, the hometown 11 pushed to find the go-ahead goal, only to find Laurino protecting the nylon. On a low, driven corner kick in the 86th minute, Bullet freshman Kristin Salmond (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) volleyed the ball to the left side where Laurino made a diving grab to keep the score knotted going into overtime.
During overtime Muhlenberg would see another big shot from Grove while Gettysburg would look to Lisa Schechet (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) in the 106th minute to volley a corner kick shot of her own. This time Laurino made a sensational dive to the left to keep out the golden goal.
Muhlenberg outshot Gettysburg 17-16 while the Bullets held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, October 4 at home against Dickinson College. Game time is 4 p.m.
