Heleniak, Martorana Lead Johns Hopkins Past Gettysburg, 54-13

BALTIMORE, Md. - Rob Heleniak threw for a career-high 286 yards and Scott Martorana ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 54-13 in Centennial Conference football action on Friday night.

Heleniak went 20 for 30 and connected on two touchdown tosses to Zach Baylin and a third to Wes Moore to give the Blue Jays (3-1, 2-0 CC) their third consecutive victory and sixth straight over the Bullets (0-5, 0-3 CC).

Gettysburg's Dennis Flaherty (Oreland, PA/Bishop McDevitt) became the first Bullet quarterback to reach 4,000 career passing yards, completing 17 of 30 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown, a 61-yard strike to Pat Jordan (Bethesda, MD/Gonzaga College) in the game's opening minutes.  Flaherty finished the game with 4,221 career passing yards.

Subbing for injured fullbacks Zack Smith (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and Jay Toscano (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City), senior Bryan Pojanowski (Rockaway Twp., NJ/Morris Knolls) - normally one of the team's starting halfbacks - carried 20 times for 82 yards and scored his team-leading sixth touchdown of the season on a six-yard run late in the first half.

Gettysburg struck on its first possession of the game, taking a 6-0 lead when Flaherty found Jordan on a 61-yard catch-and-run with only 1:22 gone in the first quarter.

The Bullets failed to capitalize on a Cliff Mason (Greenville, PA/Greenville) interception on the Johns Hopkins' first possession and the Blue Jays rattled off 20 straight points to take a 14-point lead.

Heleniak found Baylin on a nine-yard touchdown pass to cap a six-play, 50-yard drive and tie the game at 6-6 with 7:41 left in the first quarter.

Johns Hopkins took the lead for good at 13-6 when Mike Little recovered a Pojanowski fumble at the Gettysburg 18 and Martorana followed with a seven-yard touchdown scamper five plays later.

Martorana scored his second touchdown of the night on a six-yard run to make it 20-6 Blue Jays with 11:31 left in the half.

The Bullets marched 53 yards on five plays to pull within 20-13 with 1:32 left before halftime.  Flaherty keyed the drive with a 39-yard pass to Pete Vincelli (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) before Pojanowski capped it with a six-yard run around left end.

Johns Hopkins, however, was able to answer in the final 1:29 of the half, driving 74 yards on seven plays in one minute, 23 seconds to restore its 14-point cushion.  Heleniak went 5-for-5 on the crucial march and found Baylin on a 12-yard touchdown pass with nine second remaining in the half to make it 27-13 Blue Jays.

Johns Hopkins tacked on 27 unanswered points in the second half, including two defensive touchdowns in the game's final seven seconds.

Defensively for Gettysburg, Mason led the team with nine total tackles while Mark Johnson (Corona, CA/Acad. New Church Boys School [PA]), Pat Currier (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) and John Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) each recorded a team-high five solo tackles. 

Locally, Travis O'Brien (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) saw his first action as a Bullet quarterback, connecting on 2 of 6 passes for 20 yards while suffering one interception.  Keith Adams (Hanover, PA/New Oxford) recorded five total tackles, including four solo stops at inside linebacker.

Jordan finished with three catches for a team-high 75 yards while Vincelli caught three passes for 56 yards.

Following an off week, Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, October 14 at home against Ursinus College.  Game time is 1 p.m.
