GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the fourth time in his career and the second game in a row, Jeremy Shapiro tallied a pair of goals as 25th-ranked Gettysburg blanked Susquehanna 3-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday. With the win, the Bullets improve to 2-0 overall
Mike Bevilacqua also picked up his first collegiate goal when he netted his first collegiate shot during a melee in front of the Susquehanna goal. Bullet goalkeeper Nick LaPorta made three stops while seeing 90 minutes between the posts.
It took Shapiro only five and a half minutes into the match to find the net. After making a run across the goal mouth, Shapiro buried a reverse drop from James Miller and collected his first of two on the day and second gamewinner in 2000. Miller would score two assists on the match.
Midway through the first half, head coach Dave Wright would look to the bench for some extra spark, where he would find Bevilacqua. Just seconds after he entered the game, Bevilacqua received a pass from Miller and drilled his first shot past the keeper, notching the Gettysburg lead up to 2-0 at the 24:03 mark. Frank Ianni was also credited with an assist.
The onset on the second half found the Crusaders pushing hard on Gettysburg's defense, but the Bullets would ice their win when Bevilacqua drew a foul in the Susquehanna box, setting up a Shapiro penalty kick.
Gettysburg outshot the Crusaders 18-7 and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Gettysburg (2-0, 0-0 CC) returns to action on Saturday, September 9 at the Mary Washington Classic, where the Bullets take on Mary Washington in day one of competition. Game time is 1 p.m.
