GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Erin Benedict sank a late game goal to lead Messiah College to a 1-0 win over Gettysburg College in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday. With the loss the Bullets' overall record evens out at 1-1.
After almost 78 minutes of scoreless soccer, the visiting Falcons managed to slip past the Bullet defense and tally the only goal they would need to win. Benedict received the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and, after slipping past the home team defense, drove the ball to the opposite post for her first goal of the 2000 season.
Despite the loss, Taryn Chomik (Allentown, PA/Alentown Central Catholic), Nicole DeSantis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), Kay McLaughlin (Floral Park, NY/St. Mary's) and Whitney Jackson (West Simsbury, CT/Westminster School) comprised the core of a Gettysburg defense that gave a gritty performance. Goalkeeper Carine Doyle (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) stepped into the cage for her first collegiate start and notched 7 saves on the afternoon.
Messiah led Gettysburg 14-7 in shots and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, September 9 vs. New York University in day one of the William Smith hosted Heron Cup. Game time is 2 p.m.
