READING, Pa. – Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored a game-high 15 points and Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) added 14 to lead Gettysburg past Alvernia 66-60 in non-conference men's basketball action on Monday.
Cody Bowers (Indiana, PA/Indiana) added nine points, knocking down two of his 3-pointers during a 10-0 second-half run that sealed the Bullets' third road victory of the season and helped Gettysburg (7-7) return to the .500 mark.
Alvernia's Ray Strickland led all players with 16 points while Deotis Carolina notched 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Crusaders (6-6) lost for the third time in their last four games.
Gettysburg trailed through most of the first 10 minutes of a fast-moving first half, before using a 12-2 run to go ahead for good.
Schreiber tied the game at 14 with a turnaround jumper at the 10:08 mark and McNeil put the Bullets ahead to stay with the first of his four 3-pointers on Gettysburg's next possession.
Bowers followed with the first of his three treys at the 8:10 mark to make it 20-14. Following a put-back by Carolina, Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) scored on a backdoor layup and Brad Billmeier (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) scored two of his four points on a short turnaround for a 24-16 lead with 5:35 left in the half.
McNeil's second 3-pointer gave the Bullets a 29-22 edge with 1:16 remaining and the Bullets took a 31-24 lead into halftime on two free throws from Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony's).
Alvernia pulled within 33-29 in the first 1:16 of the second half on a 3-pointer from Chris Alba and a running left-hander from Tillman Sims, but the Crusaders would get no closer the rest of the way.
McNeil stroked another three and Schreiber scored four points to spark a 10-2 run that put the Bullets ahead 43-31 with 13:36 left.
Alvernia struck for the next five points to pull within seven, but Bowers knocked down two threes in a 10-0 Gettysburg run that made it 53-36.
Callahan finished with 10 points and a team-best four assists. Dwayne Walker also reached double figures for Alvernia with 12 points.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, January 17 at home against Western Maryland College. Game time is 8 p.m.
