Gettysburg downs Bryn Mawr 72-20 for tenth straight victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) scored a team-high 13 points and the Gettysburg defense allowed its lowest point total in 20 years with a 72-20 victory over Bryn Mawr in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

 Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) scored eight of her 11 points in the game's first 3:09 to help Gettysburg race to a 17-0 lead and take a 35-5 advantage into halftime.  Bryn Mawr's 20-point showing was the lowest by a Bullet opponents since Lebanon Valley managed only 14 points in a 79-14 Gettysburg win exactly 20 years ago to the day on January 20, 1981.

 Sarah Payne (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) also reached double figures for Gettysburg, scoring 10 points to help the Bullets win their tenth straight game.

 Despite shooting only 30 percent from the floor in the first half, Gettysburg (14-2, 7-1 CC) took command of the game by scoring the first 17 points.

 Hodge scored in the paint with 32 seconds gone for the day's first points and Bear tallied the next eight points on four free throws, a fast-break layup and a second-chance jumper for a 10-0 Bullet lead with 16:51 left in the first half.

 Keriann Van Nostrand (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) scored the first two of her five points on a layup from Adrienne Simmons (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) and Hodge followed with five straight points to make it 17-0 at the 13:37 mark.

 Bryn Mawr's Vanessa von Hagen broke the scoring drought with a jumper at 11:54, but Gettysburg's Kelsey Williams (Wanamie, PA/Greater Nanticoke) scored consecutive baskets to key a 14-0 run that made it 31-2 with 5:43 before halftime.

 The Bullets pulled down a season-best 64 rebounds on the game, including 13 by Katie Hewes (West Chester, PA/Villa Maria Academy) and a career-high 11 from freshman Karyn Waszmer (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai).  Fellow newcomer Amanda Cecil (New York, NY/Marymount School) set career highs with six points, three rebounds and three assists.

 Jess Larson led the Mawrters (0-14, 0-8 CC) with eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots while von Hagen added seven points and five boards.

 Gettysburg, currently ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region, returns to action on Wednesday, January 24 at Dickinson College.  Game time is 6 p.m.
