Gettysburg wins key conference road battle at Dickinson, 60-54

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) led all players with 23 points and Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) added 12 points to lead Gettysburg past Dickinson 60-54 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.

Schreiber and McNeil, the team's top scorers this season, combined for 25 of Gettysburg's 28 points in the decisive second half to help the Bullets (10-7, 5-1 CC) win their fourth straight game and hold onto second place in the CC West Division behind Franklin & Marshall.

Tony Beers led the Red Devils (8-9, 3-3 CC) with 16 points while Matt Shaffer, the conference's second-leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, was held to 12 points on 3-of-9 shooting.

The Red Devils took their last lead of the game at 43-40 on a 3-pointer from Ellis Proctor with 10:09 remaining before Gettysburg rallied.

Schreiber tied the game at 44 on a layup at the 8:24 mark, then followed an empty Dickinson trip with another inside bucket for a 46-44 Bullet lead with 7:42 left.

McNeil added a pair of free throws for a four-point cushion, but Beers answered with a layup to pull the Red Devils within 48-46 at the 6:47 mark.

Gettysburg used a 7-4 run to take a 55-50 lead with 2:34 to play, before Dickinson crept within one on layups from Billy Hagan and Beers, the latter coming with 34 seconds left.

Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony's) made it a 56-54 game by converting one of two free throws on the Bullets' next possession.  Following a Dickinson turnover, McNeil converted four straight free throws on two trips to the line in the final 11 seconds to seal the win.

Dickinson opened the game on an 11-4 run, but Schreiber scored six of Gettysburg's 10 straight points to give the Bullets a 14-11 lead only 5:59 into the game.

The Bullets led by as many as eight points in the opening period, but Dickinson used another 11-4 run in the final 4:07 of the half to cut the Gettysburg advantage to 32-31 heading into halftime.

Cody Bowers (Indiana, PA/Indiana) scored all eight of his points in the first half while Kevin Boyle (Dublin, PA/Lansdale Catholic) added six points and five rebounds.

Mike Weniger finished with nine points and six boards for Dickinson.

The game's deliberate pace was in sharp contrast to last year's meeting between the teams in Carlisle, when the Bullets won a 101-91 shootout on the last day of the season.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, January 27 at home against Swarthmore College.  Game time is 7 p.m.
