GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Heather Kile scored 11 of her game-high 24 points in overtime to lead the Swarthmore women's basketball team past Gettysburg 71-65 in a battle of Centennial Conference (CC) division leaders on Saturday.
Kile scored the Garnet's first seven points of the extra period, then assisted on Sarah Tufano's go-ahead basket with 33 seconds remaining that made it 67-65. The 2000 CC Player of the Year hit four free throws in the final 18 seconds to seal the victory, snapping the Bullets' winning streak at 11 games.
Keriann Van Nostrand (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) led Gettysburg (15-3, 8-2 CC) with a career-high-tying 19 points while Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) added 10 points and sent the game into overtime with a 28-foot buzzer-beater at the end of regulation.
Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) added 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for the Bullets, who were without the services of injured leading scorer Dana Bear.
Swarthmore (15-2, 7-1 CC) led 52-44 with 2:41 to play in regulation following Alison Furman's fifth 3-pointer of the game before the Bullets rallied.
Wilson converted a second-chance layup on Gettysburg's next possession and Kelsey Williams (Wanamie, PA/Greater Nanticoke) scored three points on a free throw and jumper to pull the home squad within 52-49 with 1:38 left.
Kile scored on Swarthmore's next trip, then went one-of-two from the free throw line after two charity tosses by Van Nostrand to make it 55-51 in favor of the Garnet with 20 seconds left in regulation.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) then scored on a put-back with eight ticks remaining to pull Gettysburg within 55-53.
After Tufano made one of two free throws with six seconds left, the Bullets forced overtime when Wilson's desperation heave from 28 feet away swished through as time expired.
Drevna knocked down a 3-pointer on Gettysburg's first possession of overtime for a 59-56 lead, but Kile scored on a layup and jumper in the paint to restore the Garnet's advantage at 60-59.
Two free throws by Van Nostrand made it 65-63 Bullets with 1:40 left in the overtime period, but Swarthmore reeled off the final eight points to pick its second straight win over Gettysburg.
The Garnet led by as many as 10 points in a first half before taking a 23-21 lead into the locker room. The teams combined to shoot only 24.2 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Furman finished with 15 points for Swarthmore while Tufano added 11. Hodge scored eight points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Bullets.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, January 31 at Johns Hopkins University. Game time is 6 p.m.
