Gettysburg downs Swarthmore for fifth straight win, 55-45

 Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored a game-high 17 points and the Gettysburg defense held Swarthmore to four field goals in the second half as the Bullets downed the Garnet 55-45 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.

Kevin Boyle (Dublin, PA/Lansdale Catholic) continued to play well in his new starting role, adding 15 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots as Gettysburg (11-7, 6-1 CC) won for the fifth straight game.

The win also helped the Bullets move into a tie for first place in the CC West Division with Franklin & Marshall after the Diplomats fell at Washington 85-73 earlier in the day.

David Pearce led Swarthmore (3-14, 2-5 CC) with 11 points while Chris Loeffler also reached double digits with 10.

Following a back-and-forth first 10 minutes in which the Garnet led by as many as four points, Gettysburg battled back to tie the game at 18 and never trailed following a 3-pointer by Antoine Gaither (Laurel, MD/Laurel) that made it 21-18 with 7:13 left in the first half.

Baskets from David Gammill and Zack Ellison pulled Swarthmore within 29-28 in the first 3:55 of the second half.  Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony's) answered with a 3-pointer to start a 10-3 run that pushed the Gettysburg lead to 39-31 with 13:47 remaining.

Pearce and Jacob Letendre each hit a pair of free throws to make it a 39-35 game, but Callahan and McNeil scored four points apiece during a 10-1 run that gave the Bullets a 49-36 lead – their largest of the game – with 6:54 left.

The Garnet, who connected on only 12 of 49 (24.5 percent) shots from the field on the night, could get no closer than seven down the stretch.

Callahan finished with seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds while Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) added eight points and a game-high 12 boards in the win.  Schreiber also inched closer to the 1,000-point mark for his career, finishing the night with 962 career points.

Eran Ganot added seven points and eight rebounds for Swarthmore.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, January 31 at home against CC West Division rival Johns Hopkins University.  Game time is 8 p.m.
