GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Brian Cosgrove hit a fallaway jumper in the lane with six seconds left to break a 58-all tie and lift Johns Hopkins to a 60-58 win over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Bullet guard Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), who led all scorers with 20 points, missed the first of two free throws with one second remaining before having his intentional miss on the second shot wiped out on a lane violation.
The Blue Jays (12-7, 5-3 CC) were able to successfully inbound the ball and run out the clock, snapping the Bullets' winning streak at five games and pulling Johns Hopkins within one game of Gettysburg (11-8, 6-2 CC) for the CC West Division's second and final playoff spot.
Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony's) added 14 points and six rebounds while Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) also reached double figures with 10 in the losing effort.
Steve Adams shot 9-for-12 from the floor en route to a team-high 19 points for Johns Hopkins while Matthew Eisley added 16 points and a team-best nine boards.
The ultimate outcome overshadowed a furious second-half comeback by the Bullets, who trailed 46-34 with 11:35 left in the game before rallying to tie the contest at 56 with 1:14 to play.
Callahan scored six points during a 15-5 Gettysburg run that help the home squad pull within 51-49 at the 5:07 mark.
Eisley answered with a 3-point play to push the Johns Hopkins lead back to five at 54-49, but McNeil made six consecutive free throws in the next 2:50 and Callahan hit the first of two charity tosses to tie the game at 56-56 with 1:14 remaining.
Eisley gave the Blue Jays a 58-56 lead on a layup with 52 seconds left, but McNeil tied the game with two more free throws at the 18-second mark.
On its next possession, Johns Hopkins worked the ball into the frontcourt before calling timeout to set up the winning play. Cosgrove took the inbounds pass with nine seconds left and drilled a fallaway jumper in the lane for the final 60-58 margin.
Leading 26-24 with 1:55 left before halftime, the Blue Jays used a 12-2 run across both halves to take 38-26 lead only 1:17 into the second half. Adams scored six of his 19 points during that stretch.
Johns Hopkins shot 58 percent from the floor for the game, including a 13-for-21 (61.9 percent) showing in the first half.
Greg Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) added six points and a game-high six assists for Gettysburg.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, February 3 at Haverford College. Game time is 3 p.m.
