GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) posted her second straight double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds to earn most valuable player honors and lead Gettysburg to a 58-49 win over Susquehanna in the championship game of the Days Inn Tournament on Saturday.
Hodge, who averaged 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in two victories over the weekend, set the tone with nine points and nine rebounds in 14 active first-half minutes, helping the Bullets (10-2) to their third Days Inn title in the 11-year history of the event and their first since 1995.
In addition, Gettysburg avenged losses to the Crusaders (8-3) in each of the last two Days Inn tournaments while winning its sixth straight game and ninth out of 10.
After knocking down a tournament-record six 3-pointers in Friday's win over Goucher, freshman Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) was held in check from behind the arc, but still scored 13 big points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Susquehanna's Karyn Kern posted 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double to earn a spot on the all-tournament squad. The Crusaders were without the services of all-conference forward Leslie Clementoni, who suffered an injury in her team's first-round win over York on Friday.
Also named to the all-tournament team were Goucher's Maren Hill and York's Kellie Flynn, both of whom averaged double-doubles for the weekend. The Spartans defeated their conference rivals in Saturday's consolation game, 84-57.
In addition to her offensive output, Hodge teamed with center Cory Dallas (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) to keep Kern in check. A 56-percent shooter entering the weekend, the former Crusader All-American was held to 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from the floor while committing a team-high six turnovers.
Down 30-25 at halftime, Susquehanna rallied to take a 37-34 lead with 15:37 remaining before Gettysburg responded.
Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) hit a jumper at the 14:46 mark and Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) converted 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 37 with 13:26 left.
The Crusaders took their last lead of the game on a basket from Alison Ream, but Dallas scored consecutive buckets in the paint for a 41-39 Gettysburg edge with 11:27 remaining.
Wilson hit three more free throws and Keriann Van Nostrand (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) capped the 12-3 run with the last two of her 11 points to put the Bullets ahead 46-39 at 9:45.
Drevna's putback at 5:48 made it 48-41, but Susquehanna answered with an 8-3 run to pull within 51-49 following a Kern layup at 2:12, the Crusaders' final points of the game.
On the Bullets' next possession, Bear was fouled on a driving layup and converted the 3-point play for a 54-49 edge. Hodge iced the win with a clutch putback and two free throws in the final 58 seconds.
Hodge and Van Nostrand each scored nine points to help the Bullets build a 30-25 lead in a first half that featured eight lead changes.
Ream finished with 16 points on the afternoon while Amy Harrington scored all nine of her points in the first half.
For Gettysburg, the forward tandem of Katie Havens (Scottsdale, AZ/Wissahickon) and Katie Hewes (West Chester, PA/Villa Maria Academy) combined for 13 rebounds to help the Bullets to a 48-28 advantage on the glass.
Gettysburg, which is off to a 10-2 start for the first time since the 1994-95 season, returns to action on Wednesday, January 10 at home against Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg College. Game time is 6 p.m.
