COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Shearrod Duncan carried 34 times for 280 yards and two touchdowns and the Ursinus defense snagged four interceptions to lead the Bears (3-3, 2-2 CC) over Gettysburg 31-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.
Duncan, already the CC's leading rusher this season, scored on runs of 22 and 15 yards, finishing with the second-best single-game rushing total in program history. Only Bill Sedgwick's 306-yard outing against Western Maryland in 1993 eclisped Duncan's performance on Homecoming Saturday.
Led by senior Lyle Hemphill, the Ursinus defense also turned in a strong effort, recording four interceptions, three sacks and two forced fumbles while scoring the game's first two points on a first-quarter safety. Hemphill finished with eight tackles (6 solo), one interception and one fumble recovery.
Gettysburg freshman Mike Lublanecki (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) carried a career-high 21 times for 70 yards, but was held without a touchdown for the first time in six games this season. Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) caught five passes for 60 yards and also fired a 51-yard halfback option pass to Mike Irvine (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) on the Bullets' first play from scrimmage.
Sophomore Gavin Beier (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) connected on 11 of 32 passes for 126 yards in his first collegiate start, but also tossed four interceptions and took three sacks. Ryan Moore (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) led Gettysburg (2-4, 0-3 CC) with 12 tackles (9 solo) and also recorded his conference-leading sixth interception of the season.
Hemphill's interception and fumble recovery stopped the Bullets deep in Ursinus territory on Gettysburg's first two possessions, before punter Greg Furman helped the Bears get on the scoreboard.
Furman's second boot of the day pinned the Bullets at their own 3 and an errant pitch from Beier to Lublanecki resulted in an Ursinus safety and a 2-0 lead with 2:18 left in the first quarter.
Following the free kick, the Bears marched 59 yards on only five plays, capped by Chris Rahill's 13-yard touchdown strike to Mike Dale with four seconds left in the quarter.
Gettysburg went 3-and-out on its next two possessions, before Duncan helped Ursinus push the lead to 16-0. The senior ripped off gains of 6 and 12, then scored from 22 yards out on third-and-9 to cap the Bears' 6-play, 56-yard drive midway through the second quarter.
The Bullets' marched to the Ursinus 20 and 18, respectively, on their final two drives of the half, but turned the ball over on downs both times.
Ryan Regensburg connected on a 31-yard field goal to push the lead to 19-0 on Ursinus' first drive of the second half.
Mark Hineman returned a Beier interception 31 yards for a touchdown with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter to make it 25-0 and Duncan scored from 15 yards out on the Bears' next possession for a 31-0 lead.
Gettysburg scored its only points of the day following Grant Acker's (Howell, NJ/Peddie School) first collegiate interception at the Bear 24. Beier's one-yard plunge on first-and-goal from the 1 pulled the Bullets within 31-7 with 10:14 left in the game.
Eric Cowie's interception at the Ursinus 4 derailed Gettysburg's final scoring threat with 3:02 remaining.
Cliff Mason (Greenville, PA/Greenville) forced a pair of fumbles on the day and was also in on six tackles for the Bullets, including four solo stops.
Jon Craig led the Bears with 10 tackles (9 solo) while Eric Shipe also recorded an interception. Rahill finished 10-of-25 for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday at home against Muhlenberg. Game time is 1 p.m.
