GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Michael McLaughlin (Swampscott,
MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon), Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield,
MA/Thayer Academy) and Chris Borcik (Reisterstown,
MD/Franklin) each scored goals to lead Gettysburg past
Mary Washington 3-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday.
McLaughlin netted the game's first goal in the 16th minute
of the game from a David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown)
assist in the 16th minute.
With time running out in the first half, Bevilacqua scored
his fourth goal of the season from Clayton Krum's (Hellertown,
PA/Moravian Academy) team-leading fifth assist.
Borcik sealed the Bullet victory with a goal in the 47th minute
from a Will Hohman (Landenberg, PA/St. Mark's [DE])
assist.
Mary Washington outshot Gettysburg 19-13 in the game, but
most of their shots went high or wide of the goal in windy
conditions. The Eagles best scoring opportunity came in the
52nd minute when Marc Salotti had an open goal, but
Bullet goalkeeper Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair)
was able to recover to make a sliding save.
Kopp and David Love (Highland Falls, NY/James I O'Neill)
combined for the Gettysburg shutout with Kopp recording a
game-high four saves and Love adding two stops. The shutout
was the Bullets fifth-straight shutout, which was also accomplished
in 1991 and 1996. For Mary Washington, backup netminder Brian
Hall had three saves.
Gettysburg improves to 12-3 on the season, while Mary Washington
falls to 10-5. The Bullets will travel to Franklin & Marshall
on Saturday in a Centennial Conference match-up. Start time
is 1:30 p.m.
