GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Quarterback Justin Jones accounted for four touchdowns and Matt Bernardo carried 28 times for a game-high 164 yards and one score to lead Muhlenberg past Gettysburg 41-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.
Jones collected 91 yards and three fourth-quarter touchdowns on the ground, and also connected with Joshua Carter on an 18-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter of the victory, the Mules' second straight 41-point shutout of the Bullets (2-5, 0-4 CC).
Bernardo, who entered the game ranked third among all Division III players with 16.0 points per game, recorded his program-record 17th rushing touchdown of the season on a 13-yard scamper that opened the scoring with 5:14 left in the first quarter.
Jon-Paul Skarpetowski led the Muhlenberg defensive effort with a team-high 12 tackles (8 solo, 3 for loss) and two pass breakups as the Mules (5-2, 4-1 CC) held Gettysburg to 151 yards of total offense and a 3-for-20 showing on third-down conversions.
Bullet quarterback Gavin Beier (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) completed 16 of 42 passes for 94 yards and one interception in his second collegiate start. Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) caught a team-high four passes for 21 yards while Mike Irvine (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) and Mike Schwalb (Bernardsville, NJ/Pingry School) collected three receptions apiece.
As they have all season, Jones and Bernardo sparked the Mules' 503-yard offensive showing.
On Muhlenberg's second drive of the day, Jones hit Alfredo Mercuri on a 21-yard strike to the Gettysburg 32 and Bernardo scored four plays later to give the Mules a 7-0 lead.
The Bullets moved into Muhlenberg territory on three occasions in the second quarter, but were denied each time. However, a pair of missed field goals and a strong Gettysburg defensive effort – paced by Matt Zangrilli's (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) first interception of the season – kept the home squad within seven heading into halftime.
Jones pushed the Mules' lead to 14-0 with 4:54 left in the third when he rolled out of the pocket on third-and-16 from the Bullet 18 and found Carter in the right corner of the end zone to cap a seven-play, 47-yard march.
Jones then finished off three of Muhlenberg's next four drives with touchdown runs of 41, 4 and 17 yards, respectively, to put the game out of reach at 34-0 with 5:13 remaining.
Kamali Roberts, who carried 14 times for 77 yards on the afternoon, capped scoring on a three-yard touchdown run with 2:50 left in the game.
Cliff Mason (Greenville, PA/Greenville) led the Gettysburg defense with nine tackles (6 solo, 1 for loss) and forced his third fumble in the last two games. Chris Hrynczyszyn (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) also record nine tackles while Keith Adams (Hanover, PA/New Oxford) was in on eight stops, including six solo tackles.
In addition to Skarpetowski's performance, Muhlenberg junior Bo Rodrigues made six solo tackles and returned an interception 54 yards in the second quarter.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at St. Lawrence University. Game time is 1 p.m.
