Gettysburg wins tip-off with 75-63 win over Lebanon Valley; Callahan named tournament MVP

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s) scored a career-high 23 points and the Bullets hit all five shots in overtime as Gettysburg defeated Lebanon Valley 75-63 at the Gettysburg Men’s Basketball Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday.

 Callahan was named tournament Most Valuable Player and John Schnebly (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) chipped in a career-best 18 points.

 Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes), who finished with 15 points on the night and was named to the all-tournament team, scored the first five points in overtime to give the Bullets (2-0) a 63-60 lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the final four minutes.

The Flying Dutchmen’s first three points in overtime came on free throws to make it 63-61, but Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) answered with a 3-pointer followed by a free throw from Schnebly, increasing Gettysburg’s lead to six.

John Sharkey, an all-tournament team selection, hit a jumper for Lebanon Valley (1-1) to cut the Bullets’ lead to 67-63.  The Dutchmen went scoreless in the rest of the overtime as Gettysburg reeled off the last eight points of the game.

With 16 seconds remaining in the game, Lebanon Valley led 58-56 after a free throw by Sharkey forcing a Bullet timeout with six seconds left on the clock.

Gettysburg freshman Dave Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep. School) scored on a lay-up to tie it 58-58 and send the game into overtime.

The Bullets’ final lead came at 45-43 with 15:21 left in the second half, but the Dutchmen tied it on a lay-up by Darren Pugh, also selected to the all-tournament team, with 14:38 remaining in the game.

Lebanon Valley managed to push the lead to as many as six points at 12:18, but Gettysburg fought back to tie the game on three separate occasions.  However, the Bullets could never take the lead in the second half.

 For Gettysburg, Natale posted a team-high seven rebounds while Callahan collected six boards and three assists for the game.  Schnebly dished out four assists and tallied one steal.

 Sharkey led the Dutchmen with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds while Pugh added 12 points and collected six boards.  Jon-David Byers chipped in 15 points while Ryan Moore dished out three assists on the night.

 Chris Jacklich was selected to the all-tournament team for John Carroll.

 The Bullets return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at home against Messiah. Game time is 8 p.m.
