Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) scored 15 points and added seven rebounds and five assists as Gettysburg jumped to a 15-point lead in the opening 10 minutes and went on to defeat Marymount 80-58 in non-conference men’s basketball action on Thursday.

Natale shot a perfect 5-for-5 from both the floor and the free-throw line to give the Bullets their fifth straight win, the program’s best start since opening 5-0 in 1997.  Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s) led Gettysburg with 16 points while John Schnebly (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) also hit double figures with 13.

Terry Hoffman led all scorers with 19 points and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds for Marymount, which had its two-game winning streak snapped.  Devin Archie added 14 points and Dallas Crawley scored 10 for the Saints (2-3).

With all five starters scoring points in the game’s first six minutes, the Bullets jumped out to a 13-2 lead and never looked back.

Glaser assisted on Schnebly’s layup to open the scoring then added a put-back to make it 4-0.  Hoffman’s put-back cut the lead to 4-2, but Natale scored off another Glaser assist and Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) knocked down a 3-pointer to key a 9-0 burst that made it 13-2.

Archie hit a trey of his own to cut the deficit to 13-6, but Callahan and McNeil answered with back-to-back 3-pointers and the Bullets would lead by double digits the rest of the way.

Gettysburg pushed the advantage to 27-9 with 6:29 left in the half on the second of two Brad Billmeier (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) layups from Kevin Boyle (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Dublin).  The Bullets led by 20 at the half on Schnebly’s put-back at the buzzer.

Marymount pulled within 45-32 early in the second half on Crawley’s tip-in, but a 9-2 run gave the Bullets’ a 20-point cushion.

Boyle, making his first appearance of the season, put an exclamation point on the win with an alley-oop dunk off of Antoine Gaither’s (Laurel, MD/Laurel) scoop pass with 4:21 left.

Gettysburg held the Saints to an 8-for-29 (28 percent) shooting performance in the first half and a 33-percent showing for the game.

Gaither finished with a career-best nine points and a team-high three steals.  McNeil, the Centennial Conference’s leading scorer at 20.5 points per game, scored eight to go along with five rebounds.  The Bullets shot 19-for-22 (86 percent) from the free-throw line.

Gettysburg will seek its first 6-0 start since 1952 when the Bullets open their conference slate at Washington (Md.) on Saturday.  Game time is 3 p.m.
