Smith, Ramsey Help Dickinson Rush Past Gettysburg, 30-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mike Smith and Jake Ramsey combined for 251 rushing yards and three touchdowns to lead Dickinson over Gettysburg 30-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.

Smith, the reigning CC Player of the Week, carried 23 times for 170 yards and scored on runs of 3 and 1 yards in the first half to help the Red Devils (5-4, 3-2 CC) post their sixth straight win over the Bullets (3-6, 0-5 CC) and retain possession of The Little Brown Bucket, the trophy which resides with the rivalry's annual winner.

Ramsey, alternating at quarterback with freshman Keven Willliams, ripped off a 39-yard run among his seven carries for 81 yards and also scored on a 1-yard dive on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Dickinson, which insured its 15th consecutive non-losing season with the victory, rolled up 358 rushing yards on the afternoon, the hightest total allowed by Gettysburg this season.  The Red Devils entered the day with a conference-leading 231.0 rushing yards per game.

Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) led the struggling Bullet offense with 11 carries for 23 yards while also catching three passes for 32 yards.  Sophomore quarterback Gavin Beier (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) completed only 8 of 20 passes for 103 yards and one interception.

Gettysburg senior Ryan Moore (Glenolden, PA/Interboro), the CC's all-time leading tackler playing in his final home game, led all players with 16 tackles, including 14 solo stops and one sack.

The Red Devils opened the game according to plan, taking the opening kickoff and marching 78 yards on 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead.

Save only for a 16-yard reception on the second play of the drive, Smith carried on all nine other snaps, accounting for 62 yards and the team's first six points on a three-yard run with 9:44 left in the first quarter.

The Dickinson defense held Gettysburg to 22 total yards on the Bullets' first two drives of the game before scoring again to make it 14-0 with 12:40 left before halftime.

Smith opened the seven-play, 78-yard drive with a 16-yard scamper to the Red Devil 38.  Five plays later, he rumbled 43 yards to the Gettysburg 1, before scoring on the next play.

Dickinson marched to the Bullet 8 on its next drive, but had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Drew Magyar and a 17-0 lead with 6:49 left before the break.

Gettysburg broke into Red Devil territory for the first time when Mark Johnson (Corona, CA/Acad. of the New Church [PA]) returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Dickinson 44.  Sam Shipley's (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) six-yard run on a fake punt temporarily prolonged the drive, but the Bullets' stalled on the Red Devil 24 when Mike Jackowski broke up a pass intended for Nocar on fourth-and-15.

Following a third-quarter Scott Palubinsky interception in Gettysburg territory, Ramsey capped a nine-play, 40-yard drive with a one-yard run to make it 24-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter. Dickinson closed out the scoring on Paul Cooney's one-yard touchdown run with 2:02 remaining.

Bullet interior linemen James Harrell (Waldorf, MD/Westlake) and David Kallen (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Mainland Regional) each collected seven solo tackles and three assisted stops on the afternoon.  Mike Irvine (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) caught two passes for 29 yards.

Dickinson's Bob Hess recorded a pair of sacks among his four tackles.

Gettysburg wraps up its 2001 season on Saturday, Nov. 10 at CC rival Franklin & Marshall.  Game time is 1 p.m.
