Bullets fall to Mary Washington in first round of NCAA tournament

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Marc Salotti scored two goals and Ryan Geib added a goal and an assist to lift Mary Washington over Gettysburg 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament on Wednesday.

Salotti’s one-timer off a cross from Geib broke up a scoreless match in the 80th minute and sent the Eagles on their way to a date with Richard Stockton in the Metro Region semifinals on Saturday.

The Bullets, who managed just six shots on the afternoon, wrapped up their 2001 season with a 16-5 record.  Gettysburg was making its ninth NCAA appearance after winning the program’s third Centennial Conference championship over the weekend.

Moments after Salotti’s eventual game-winner, Geib netted a free kick in the 82nd minute to make it 2-0.  Salotti scored Mary Washington’s third goal in a span of 7:06 off an assist from Paul Stepanick to set the final margin.

The Bullets best chance to score came in the 48th minute when Cameron MacLean’s (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) shot hit the post wide of Eagle goalkeeper Liam Garland.

Gettysburg goalie Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) made six saves on the afternoon.  Mary Washington, which fell to the Bullets by an identical 3-0 score on Oct. 17, held an 16-6 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in penalty kicks on the game.
