FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Marc Salotti
scored two goals and Ryan Geib added a goal
and an assist to lift Mary Washington over Gettysburg 3-0
in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament
on Wednesday.
Salotti’s one-timer off a cross from
Geib broke up a scoreless match in the 80th minute and sent
the Eagles on their way to a date with Richard Stockton in
the Metro Region semifinals on Saturday.
The Bullets, who managed just six shots
on the afternoon, wrapped up their 2001 season with a 16-5
record. Gettysburg was making its ninth NCAA appearance
after winning the program’s third Centennial Conference championship
over the weekend.
Moments after Salotti’s eventual game-winner,
Geib netted a free kick in the 82nd minute to make it 2-0.
Salotti scored Mary Washington’s third goal in a span of 7:06
off an assist from Paul Stepanick to set the
final margin.
The Bullets best chance to score came
in the 48th minute when Cameron MacLean’s (Riverside,
CT/Greenwich) shot hit the post wide of Eagle goalkeeper
Liam Garland.
Gettysburg goalie Steve Kopp (Upper
Montclair, NJ/Montclair) made six saves on the afternoon.
Mary Washington, which fell to the Bullets by an identical
3-0 score on Oct. 17, held an 16-6 advantage in shots and
a 7-1 edge in penalty kicks on the game.
