CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Freshman Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School) poured in a game-high 16 points to lead Gettysburg past Washington (Md.) 66-54 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Ross, playing in her hometown for the first time as a collegian, scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the first half after shooting 5-for-8 from the field. She was one shy of tying her career-high (17) that she posted in a 76-64 win over Ursinus on Wednesday.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) added 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while playing only 20 minutes, helping the Bullets (5-1, 3-0 CC) post their fifth straight win.
Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) tallied 11 points and a game-best seven assists in the win, one assist short of a career-best. She now has 870 career points and is four shy of moving into ninth place ahead of Megan Malloy (874) on the program's all-time scoring list.
All told, Gettysburg held a 48-39 rebounding advantage over the Shorewomen (2-3, 0-1 CC).
Allyson Britton led Washington with nine points and six rebounds while Meghan Hartzell tallied eight points and six boards in the loss. Katie Piringer and Liz Smith also added eight points apiece for the Shorewomen.
Ross knocked down a jumper to give the Bullets a 26-24 lead at the 4:14 mark, but Washington's Yianna Patronas scored a layup while drawing a foul, tying the game for the eighth time in the first half.
Patronas then completed the three-point play with a free throw to give the Shorewomen a one-point lead with 4:06 remaining in the half.
Gettysburg got the lead back for good on a layup by Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) to make it 28-27 at the 3:35 mark of the first half.
The Bullets proceeded to go on an 11-1 run to head into halftime with a 37-27 lead.
In the second half, Washington came within nine on a jumper by Hartzell at 12:44 to make it 45-36. Gettysburg increased its lead to 11 on a layup by Ross with 11:07 remaining in the game.
The Bullets never looked back as they held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at home against conference foe Johns Hopkins. Game time is 6 p.m.
