Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Terence Callahan (Bay
Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s) scored a career-high 25 points
and David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep)
added all 10 of his points in the decisive second half as
19th-ranked Gettysburg downed Johns Hopkins 65-57 in Centennial
Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.
Callahan, shooting a blistering 65 percent
from 3-point range this season, knocked down 5 of 7 treys
and pulled in the game’s final three rebounds to help the
Bullets (7-0, 2-0 CC) seal their seventh straight win and
break a two-game home losing streak against the Blue Jays
(3-5, 1-1 CC).
Glaser put Gettysburg ahead to stay on
a layup with 6:28 remaining, then kept Johns Hopkins at arms
length down the stretch with his first collegiate 3-pointer
and a crucial free throw in the final 32 seconds. The
freshman center also added five rebounds and dished out a
career-high five assists on the night.
Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St.
Stephen’s & St. Agnes) chipped in with 19 points,
making only 2 of 9 shots from the field, but converting 13
of 15 free throws.
Kevin Marquez led the Blue
Jays with 14 points while Steve Adams, the squad’s
leading scorer, added 11 and six rebounds before fouling out
with 3:38 left. Brian Cosgrove tallied
seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
In a back-and-forth game at a raucous
Bream Gymnasium, Gettysburg passed its first real test of
the season with a combination of veteran poise and youthful
fearlessness.
Johns Hopkins led by its largest margin
of the night at 45-41 with 12:41 remaining before the Bullets
answered behind a pair of big plays from Callahan and Kevin
Boyle (Pennsburg, PA/Lansdale Catholic).
After Mike Blaine pushed
the JHU lead to four, Boyle found Callahan cutting to the
basket. The Gettysburg swingman scored and converted
the 3-point play to pull the Bullets within 45-44.
Two possessions later, Callahan stumbled
on a drive, but righted himself enough to find Boyle at the
top of the circle. Boyle pump-faked, then stepped forward
and drilled a 15-footer to put Gettysburg ahead with 10:47
left.
Johns Hopkins pulled even at 50-50 before
Glaser’s layup – off a Callahan drive-and-dish – made it 52-50
and put the Bullets ahead to stay.
A free throw from Brendan Kamm pulled
the Blue Jays within 52-51, but Glaser answered with his first
collegiate 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game with
5:49 left.
Matthew Eisley cut the
lead to 60-57 with a free throw, but the Blue Jays failed
to pull closer when Marquez missed a pair of charity tosses
with 34 seconds left.
Glaser was fouled rebounding the second
miss and knocked down the first free throw to extend the lead
to 61-57. Glaser’s second free throw rimmed out, but
Callahan tracked down the rebound and McNeil subsequently
canned a pair of foul shots to give the home squad a six-point
cushion.
Callahan iced the game by hauling in
Cosgrove’s missed three and making two free throws with 12
seconds left, setting a new career-high point total in the
process.
Callahan, the current CC Player of the
Week, kept the Bullets in the game in the first half by knocking
down 4-of-5 3-pointers and scoring 11 of his team’s first
14 points as the teams shot a combined 38 percent before the
break and headed into the locker room tied at 27.
Adams and Cosgrove combined for 13 points
and 10 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Gettysburg is now 7-0 for the first time
since 1952. The Bullets are seeking the program’s first-ever
8-0 start on Saturday at York (Pa.). Game time is 2
p.m.
