Gettysburg opens 2001 campaign with 17-2 win at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Bullet newcomer Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) opened his collegiate career with three goals and three assists, while veteran Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest Sch. [VA]) tied career-highs with four goals and six points as the Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team downed Messiah 17-2 in both teams' season opener on Wednesday.

Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) added five goals for the Bullets (1-0) while Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington) tallied career highs with two goals and three points.

Freshman Philip Steele (Potomac, MD/Georgetown Prep) opened the scoring for the visiting battlefielders with his first collegiate score, netting a pass from Pearce at the 7:42 mark. On the next two goals it was Van Nostrand handing out the assists, feeding Baran at the 5:35 mark and setting up Pearce with 45 seconds left in the quarter.

Gettysburg quickly pushed its lead to 4-0 with the onset of the second quarter as Pearce powered home an unassisted goal at 11:43.

The Falcons finally scratched the scoreboard when Dan Videon rifled the ball past Bullet goalkeeper Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) at 8:38, but it took the Bullets only 11 seconds to match the feat when Baran sank his second goal of the day. McGinnis finished the day with 15 saves.
