GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) scored four goals, including the game-winning goal as ninth-ranked Gettysburg defeated sixth-ranked Mary Washington 14-13 in overtime in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday.
Gettysburg's Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) tallied five goals and career highs with four assists and nine points while newcomer Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) scored two goals in her collegiate debut for the Bullets (1-0).
Bridget Geiman opened the scoring for Mary Washington (0-1) with an unassisted goal at 28:45 followed by Briana Gervat's pass to Pam Kramer at 26:32 for the Eagles second goal in the first half.
Mary Washington then scored its third goal when Geiman scored on a pass from Kramer at 23:51, but Gettysburg battled back with Blankenship's first career goal at 20:31 to make it 3-1.
The Bullets quickly tied the game 3-3 when Seedorf scored on a pass from Bucha at 19:35 followed by a Bucha assisted goal from Haugen.
The Eagles then made it 4-3 on an unassisted goal by Kami McNinch at 10:22 and then Karen Slotsky scored on a pass by McNinch at 9:48 to make it 5-3 in the first half.
Gettysburg fought to tie the game 5-5 before the half when Bucha scored a goal at 3:40 and one with 1:27 remaining in the half. Murphy assisted Bucha's first goal while Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) assisted her second goal.
The Bullets came out scoring in the second half as Bucha assisted Murphy for a goal at 25:18 followed by Bucha's third goal of the game at 20:34.
Mary Washington would not score until the 10:59 mark when Kramer netted an unassisted goal followed by an unassisted goal by Chrissy Swain at 9:05 to tie it 7-7. Kramer then scored another unassisted goal at 8:42 to give the lead back to the Eagles. Geiman then scored an unassisted goal at 8:17 to make it 9-7.
Gettysburg refused to give up as Seedorf scored on a pass from Bucha at 6:50 followed by Haugen's goal from Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills, East) at 5:07 to make it 9-9.
Mary Washington then went up by two with an unassisted goal by Laura Walden at 3:44 and then Geiman assisted Kramer for her fourth goal with 2:49 remaining in the game to make it 11-9.
The Bullets then scored the next three goals (one by Haugen and two by Bucha) to take the lead 12-11 with 1:08 left in the second half.
With 34 seconds remaining in regulation, Kramer scored an unassisted goal for the Eagles to tie the game 12-12 and send it to overtime.
It was all Gettysburg in overtime as Blankenship and Haugen scored two goals in the first three minutes to make it 14-12. Geiman scored the final goal of the game with one second left to make it 14-13.
Veteran Jessica Seedorf (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Ward Melville) added two goals and Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) posted one goal and two assists in the win while Murphy recorded seven of the Bullets 14 draw controls.
In the net, Michele Centrella (Greenville, DE/Tatnall School) collected eight saves while playing all 66 minutes for the Bullets while Heather Carter also tallied eight saves in 66 minutes.
Gettysburg, who entered the season ranked No. 9 in Division III, returns to action on Thursday, March 8 when they travel to Messiah. Game time is 4 p.m.
