GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tom Burke scored the go-ahead and insurance goals during a 4-0 second-half run that lifted No. 2 Washington & Lee over fourth-ranked Gettysburg 8-7 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Burke, who finished with a game-high three goals, scored in transition to put the Generals (3-0) ahead to stay at 7-6 with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.  He completed the hat trick at the 10:14 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 8-6.
Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) netted the second of his two goals with 3:20 left in the game to pull the Bullets (2-1) within one, but W&L held the home squad off the board down the stretch for its fourth consecutive win in Gettysburg's Musselman Stadium.
Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) also scored twice and recorded one assist for the Bullets.  W&L all-time leading scorer Matt Dugan tallied a pair of goals while teammate Andrew Barnett added a goal and two assists in the win.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the game's first five minutes, W&L watched Gettyburg reel off six of the next seven goals before returning the favor to seal the win.
Dugan set up Pope Hackney with 4:44 left in the third quarter to pull the Generals within 6-5, then knotted the game with an unassisted marker a little over three minutes later.
W&L goalie Wes Hays stopped the next Gettysburg possession with a save on Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) and Burke capitalized with a transition goal from Bernie Norton that made it 7-6 Generals with 28 seconds left in the third.
Burke capped the 4-0 burst by scoring off a behind-the-net feed from Barnett at the 10:14 mark of the fourth quarter.
Twombly pulled the Bullets within 8-7 off a nice pass from Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) with 3:20 remaining.
Gettysburg had a chance to tie in the final minute, but Wes Cadman's (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) shot went wide and Generals' defenseman Pete Iwancio raced for the loose ball to give the Generals possession with 30 seconds left.
Goals from Dugan, Barnett and Burke staked Washington & Lee to a 3-0 lead in the game's first 4:19.
Charlie Hanchett (Annapolis, MD/Stony Brook School [NY]) tallied a man-up goal with 5:58 left in the first quarter to stop the run and start a 5-0 Gettysburg stretch that put the Bullets ahead 5-3 with 13:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Hays finished with nine saves for W&L while Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made 12 stops for Gettysburg.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 14 at home against No. 10 Ohio Wesleyan.  Game time is 3:30 p.m.
