Gettysburg uses late rally to down Lee Univ.; Bullets fall to Alvernia in 11

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Emily Boardman (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) went 2-for-3 and knocked in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning single to lead Gettysburg past Lee (Tn.) University 6-2 in non-conference softball action on Wednesday in South Carolina.

Bullet starter Sarah Stokes (Towson, MD/Towson) worked six innings to pick up the win in her first appearance of 2001 while freshman Adrienne Simmons (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) also chipped in with a pair of hits and scored the eventual winning run.

In the day's first game, Boardman went 3-for-5 and Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) cracked a triple and home run as the Bullets fell to Alvernia 6-5 in 11 innings.

Against Lee, Gettysburg pulled even at 2 in the fourth inning before taking the lead for good in the fifth.

Simmons drew a walk from losing pitcher Marcella Ramirez and moved to second on a single from Megan Procaccini (Ship Bottom, NJ/Peddie School).  Following a passed ball, Boardman plated Simmons with a single to make it 3-2 Bullets.

Gettysburg sealed the win with three runs in the sixth frame, keyed by two more passed balls and a Simmons RBI single.  Lisa von dem Hagen (Berwyn, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) closed out the win by tossing a scoreless seventh.

After tying the opener against Alvernia with three runs in the sixth, the Bullets took leads in the ninth and 11th innings, but couldn't hang on for the win.

Kristi Patterson (Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) gave Gettysburg a 5-4 lead in the top of the 11th with an RBI single that scored Boardman.

The Crusaders answered with two runs in their half of the 11th, plating the winning run when Jen Klotz singled home Becky Beisel with two outs.

Down 3-0 after five innings, the Bullets rallied behind a solo home run from Wilson and the first of Patterson's run-scoring base hits to knot the score at 3.  Both teams scored single runs in the ninth inning before the Crusaders won it two innings later.

Courtney Todd (Eagle, ID/Centennial) took the hard-luck loss, fanning six against only two walks over 10 innings.

Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 15, taking on Beaver at 9 a.m. and St. Elizabeth (N.J.) at 11:30 a.m.  Tuesday's postponed games against Marian (Wis.) and Rhode Island College have been tentatively re-scheduled for Friday.
