GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) scored in transition with 4:39 left in regulation to break a 7-all tie and lift No. 5 Gettysburg over seventh-ranked Ohio Wesleyan 8-7 in non-conference men's lacrosse action.
Senior Mike Plantholt (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) – an All-America close defenseman in 2000 – set up the winning goal with his first collegiate assist to help the Bullets rally from a 6-2 second-quarter deficit and notch the win.
Bremer, the Bullets' leading scorer with 13 goals this season, scored the first goal in Gettysburg's 6-1 run to the end of the game, then tied the scored at 7 off a goal-mouth scramble in the closing seconds of the third quarter before netting the winner.
Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added two goals for Gettysburg while freshman goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) tied a career-high with 15 saves and kept the Bishops (0-2) off the scoreboard for the game's final 26 minutes and 17 seconds.
Jason Fogelson led Ohio Wesleyan with three goals and an assist while goalie Corey Ayers made 14 saves, including five stops in the last quarter that kept his squad in the game.
With the game tied at 7 and less than five minutes remaining, Bullet defender Adam Santry (Columbia, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) made the play that generated the winning goal.
Ohio Wesleyan put the ball in Fogelson's stick to set up the offense, but Santry knocked it loose with a stick check at the top of the attacking zone. Plantholt scooped up the loose ball and sprinted through the midfield before finding a wide-open Bremer in front of the Bishop net.
Bremer quickly finished the play to make it 8-7 Bullets with 4:39 remaining and Gettysburg held OWU without a shot the rest of the way to seal the win.
The Bullets had pulled even at 7-7 when Bremer found the ball in a pile of players and somehow scooped the shot past Ayers with 19.3 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Bishops jumped out a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and led 4-0 following a nifty behind-the-back shot by Fogelson with 13:27 left before halftime.
Gettysburg got on the board when Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington) scored off a Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) feed, but Ohio Wesleyan scored two of the next three goals to take a 6-2 lead with 2:49 left in the half.
Bremer and Van Nostrand scored goals 46 seconds apart in the final two minutes to pull within 6-4 at halftime.
Charlie Cotter pushed the Bishop advantage to 7-4 with a goal at the 11:17 mark of the third quarter, but Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) ripped an extra-man goal past Ayers less than a minute later and Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored short-handed on a terrific solo effort at 7:02 to cut the lead to 7-6.
Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 18 against sixth-ranked Denison in a game that will be played at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Game time is noon.
