Bullets set (low) scoring record, win defensive battle with Denison, 4-3

BALTIMORE, Md. – Washington & Lee 4, Washington 2.  Salisbury St. 3, Ohio Wesleyan 2.

Now you can add Gettysburg and Denison to the list of teams battling to unusually low final scores in 2001.

Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) set up the go-ahead goal with 7:12 left in regulation and added a crucial insurance tally 36 seconds later to lead No. 5 Gettysburg past sixth-ranked Denison 4-3 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Sunday at Homewood Field in Baltimore.

The Bullets' four-goal output set a program record for fewest goals scored in a victory, breaking the previous mark of five.  That record had been set five different times in the program's 37-year history, most recently in a 5-3 win over Mt. St. Mary's in 1971.

In addition, Gettysburg played its third consecutive one-goal game for the first time since playing four straight in 1997-98.

Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) scored both of the Bullets' first-half goals to lead the offensive effort while freshman goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made 15 often-spectacular saves to key the win.

Keith Bishop, Sean O'Brien and Max Wright scored single goals for Denison, which dropped its second straight one-goal game to a top five team after falling 12-11 in triple overtime at No. 3 Salisbury State on Wednesday.

After going on top 2-0 with 4:54 left before halftime, the Bullets struggled through a scoring drought of nearly 28 minutes before finding the net twice midway through the fourth quarter.

Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) beat Big Red goalie Peter Royer off a feed from Cadman with 7:12 left in regulation to break a 2-all tie.  Following a penalty to O'Brien on the ensuing faceoff scramble, Cadman scored man-up off a feed from Charlie Hanchett (Annapolis, MD/Stony Brook School [NY]) with 6:36 left to make it 4-2.

Denison (2-2) answered 17 seconds later when Wright got loose in transition and beat McGinnis to pull the Big Red within 4-3.

Denison had a number of opportunities to tie the game in the closing minutes, but McGinnis made an outstanding save on a point-blank shot by Sean Furber with 3:46 left and O'Brien ripped the Big Red's final shot off the right post with 1:05 remaining.

Following a scoreless first period, Gettysburg finally solved Denison's tough zone defense when Pearce scored from Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) with 11:25 left in the first half and found the net with an unassisted marker at 4:54 for a 2-0 lead.

Bishop took advantage of a Gettysburg turnover in the final 30 seconds of the half, scoring in transition with 0:11 left to pull the Big Red within 2-1.

Denison tied the game at 2 when O'Brien scored an unassisted goal at the 4:17 mark of the third quarter.

Gettysburg held Denison to a 0-for-7 performance in extra-man opportunities while cashing in on 2-of-7 man-up chances.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 21 at Widener.  Game time is 4 p.m.
