GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) collected four assists and Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added three goals to lead No. 4 Gettysburg past ninth-ranked Cortland State 7-4 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Pearce set up four of the Bullets' five goals to help the home squad jump to a 5-1 halftime lead en route to the win.
Goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) continued his outstanding early-season play with 16 more saves to key the victory. The freshman has recorded 31 saves in his last two games while allowing only seven goals.
Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington) and Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) each added a pair of goals for Gettysburg (5-1). Andrew Hyatt scored a goal and added two assists while Steve Feltmann made nine saves for the Red Dragons (3-2).
Hyatt gave Cortland a 1-0 lead only 1:37 into the game before the Bullets took control of the first half.
Pearce set up Van Nostrand less than two minutes after Hyatt's goal to tie the game at 1, then fed Cadman on an extra-man opportunity with 2:46 left in the first quarter to give the Bullets a 2-1 lead.
Van Nostrand scored off an assist from Charlie Hanchett (Annapolis, MD/Stony Brook School [NY]) with 11:39 remaining in the half to make it 3-1. Pearce assisted Baran at 8:44 and set up Van Nostrand on a man-down goal just 1:02 before the break for a 5-1 Gettysburg edge heading into the locker room.
Cortland pulled within 5-2 on a goal from Mike Maraia 1:07 into the second half and cut the Gettysburg lead to 6-4 with 8:47 left in the game on goals from Hyatt and Brendan Koren.
McGinnis maintained the two-goal margin with a spectacular point-blank save on Rob McKeefrey at the 5:48 mark and Cadman added an insurance goal for a 7-4 cushion with 4:50 left.
Gettysburg finished 1-of-4 on extra-man opportunities while the Red Dragons went 1-for-6 with the man-up.
While facing four top 10 programs in his first six collegiate games, McGinnis has posted a .737 save percentage and a 5.07 goals-against average. Van Nostrand continues to lead the Bullets in scoring with 20 points.
Gettysburg returns to action and opens its 2001 Centennial Conference schedule on Wednesday, Mar. 28 at home against 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
