COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Emily Durkin scored six goals and added two assists as 10th-ranked Ursinus built a 7-1 halftime lead and went on to defeat No. 6 Gettysburg 12-10 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Durkin netted a hat trick in the game's first 23:07 to help the Bears (1-0, 1-0 CC) score the game's first five goals en route to the win in their season opener.
Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored a team-high three goals for the Bullets (3-1, 0-1 CC) while Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) added two goals and two assists as Gettysburg lost in conference play for the first time since the 1999 season.
Despite outshooting Ursinus 30-18 on the day, the Bullets didn't get on the scoreboard the 6:53 mark of the first half, when Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) scored the first of her two goals to make it 5-1.
Behind two more goals from Durkin, Ursinus led 12-5 with 13:03 remaining before the Bullets stormed back.
Murphy scored from Bucha at the 11:05 mark to start the run. The duo then scored goals 16 seconds apart to cut the lead to 12-8 with 9:13 left.
Haugen tallied another unassisted marker with 2:55 remaining to pull the Bullets within 12-9, but Ursinus goalie Rebecca Mannion and the Bear defense kept Gettysburg at bay in the final minutes.
Jessica Seedorf (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Ward Melville) found the net off an assist from Haugen with 24 seconds left to close out the scoring.
Jamie Matty collected two goals and three assists for Ursinus while Erin Fitzgerald recorded a hat trick and Leigh Voight added four points on a goal and three assists. Mannion finished with 14 saves.
Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) and Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills, East) each scored a goal for the Bullets. Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) added one assist in the loss.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 29 at home against Dickinson. Game time is 4 p.m.
