GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) netted a hat trick and added two assists as fourth-ranked Gettysburg took advantage of a three-minute, non-releaseable penalty at the start of the fourth quarter to rally for a 10-7 win over No. 13 Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Trailing 6-4 entering the fourth quarter, the Bullets (6-1, 1-0 CC) went on the extended extra-man opportunity when Diplomat attackman Bryan Nolan's stick was ruled to be illegally short. Gettysburg cashed in the chance with three goals in a span of 1:47 to take the lead for good at 7-6 en route to its 23rd consecutive CC win and 12th straight over F&M.
Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) scored both of his goals on the three-minute penalty and added two assists in the win. Bullet goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) continued the stellar start to his collegiate career with a career-high 19 saves.
Greg Ivry and Jon Singer scored two goals apiece for Franklin & Marshall (5-2, 0-1 CC) while Nolan added a goal and two assists.
The Diplomats scored four straight goals in the third quarter to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead before Gettysburg turned the game around with a little help from the rule book.
Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) scored the second of his two goals with 38.4 seconds left in the third to start the Bullet comeback.
Following the illegal stick ruling between quarters, Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) cashed in the first of the man-up goals off a feed from Cadman 32 seconds into the penalty.
Pearce scored 23 seconds after that to tie the game at 6, then netted the go-ahead goal off a pass from Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Canterbury [CT]) at the 12:41 mark.
Cadman made it 8-6 by completing his hat trick off an unassisted run with 11:09 left in the game.
Singer pulled the Diplomats within 8-7 at 6:50, but McGinnis stopped a point-blank extra-man shot from Andrew Kuskowski moments later and Cadman scored the last of Gettysburg's five man-up goals with 2:12 left in the game for a 9-7 cushion.
The Bullets avoided their fifth straight single-digit scoring output when Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) found the net from Pearce with 13.4 seconds left.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first quarter, Franklin & Marshall dominated the middle stretch of the game with a 6-1 run.
Ivry put F&M on the board with a one-timer from Nolan and Vandy Vanderwarker finished a solo run to tie the game at 2 heading into halftime.
Cadman bounced home a man-up goal early in the third quarter to restore the Bullet lead at 3-2, but Nolan tied the game again with a great solo effort only 18 seconds later.
Ivry ripped a long-range blast past McGinnis to give F&M its first lead of the day at 4-3 with 8:20 left in the third quarter. Singer netted a behind-the-back shot to make it 5-3 and Kuskowski scored less than a minute later to give the Diplomats a 6-3 advantage.
Gettysburg outshot F&M 43-35 on the afternoon, but the Diplomats held a 28-25 lead in ground balls. F&M goalie David Kahn finished the day with nine saves.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, Mar. 31 at third-ranked Salisbury State. Game time is 1 p.m.
