SALISBURY, Md. – Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) scored off a feed from Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) 39 seconds into overtime to lift fourth-ranked Gettysburg over No. 3 Salisbury State 11-10 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Pearce took possession after a Bullet timeout with 3:40 left in the extra period and held the ball until threading a pass to Twombly, who faked and beat Sea Gull goalie Pat Tewes low to give Gettysburg its fifth straight win over a Top 15 opponent.
The Bullets (7-1) forced the overtime when Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) tied the game for the sixth and final time on his third goal of the day with 1:04 left in regulation.
Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) set up Van Nostrand on the game-tying goal to cap a seven-point afternoon. After being limited to one goal in four games this season due to injury, the All-America attackman exploded for four goals and three assists to key the win.
Freshman goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) continued to impress in his rookie season, stopping 14 shots in the victory.
Steve Brianas scored a team-high four goals for the Sea Gulls (9-1), who fell for the first time in four overtime games this season. Josh Bergey netted a hat trick and one assist in the loss, including a goal with 1:39 left that gave SSU its final lead of the day at 10-9.
Andy Arnold and Bergey staked the Sea Gulls to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but Milliman sounded his return with three straight markers in a span of 2 minutes, 52 seconds that made it 3-2 with 14:54 left before halftime.
Andy Murray scored unassisted off a tremedous fake to pull SSU even at 3 with 6:55 left in the second. Van Nostrand scored twice in the final 4:13 of the half give the Bullets a 6-4 advantage at the break.
Gettysburg maintained its lead until Bergey scored man-up to tie the game at 8 with 9:21 left in the fourth quarter.
Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) answered with an extra-man goal for a 9-8 Bullet edge, but Brianas tied the contest at 9 off an assist from Rob Bookhamer with 6:17 left and Bergey scored at the 1:39 mark to set up the dramatic finish.
Gettysburg face-off specialist John Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) won 17 of 25 faceoffs on the day, including the draws that led directly to the tying and winning goals.
Van Nostrand finished with four points on the day while Pearce added a goal to go with his two assists. Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) also scored a goal for the Bullets.
Gettysburg finished 2-of-6 with the extra man while SSU went 2-for-4 in man-up situations.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 4 at Haverford. Game time is 4 p.m.
