CARLISLE, Pa. – Erin Taylor (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) fired a five-inning complete game in the opener and picked up the save in game two to help Gettysburg sweep a doubleheader from Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.
The freshman allowed only three hits and one unearned run over five innings to notch her team-leading eighth win of the season as the Bullets (15-4, 7-1 CC) erupted for eight runs in the third inning en route to a 10-1 win in game one.
Taylor then came on in the seventh inning of game two to record the final out of a 4-3 Gettysburg win.
Fellow newcomer Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) put together the best day of her young collegiate career, going 5-for-8 with an RBI and three runs scored. Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley), hitting a conference-best .566 entering the twinbill, cracked a double and two triples while scoring three times on the evening.
In game one, Gettysburg led 2-1 after two innings before breaking it open with eight runs in the third.
Two errors and a bunt single by Courtney Todd (Eagle, ID/Centennial) loaded the bases with no outs. Kristi Patterson (Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) was hit by a pitch to force home Stef Mastropaolo (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) before Megan Procaccini (Ship Bottom, NJ/Peddie School) and Jen White (Quakertown, PA/Pennridge) each delivered RBI singles for a 5-1 Bullet lead.
Jenna Pabst (Boonton Twp., NJ/Mountain Lakes) followed with a two-run single to make it 7-1 and Simmons plated White with a base knock for a seven-run lead.
With two outs, Pabst came around to score on a steal and wild pitch before Emily Boardman (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) singled in Simmons to cap the outburst and give Taylor a 10-1 cushion.
In the nightcap, Gettysburg again jumped out early, then held on for the sweep.
Wilson tripled home Simmons with one out in the first inning to open the scoring and Mastropaolo followed with an RBI double. White's sacrifice fly then scored Mastropaolo for a 3-0 Gettysburg lead.
The Bullets scored their important fourth run in the third when Wilson reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third, and scored on an infield error.
Dickinson pulled within 4-2 in the sixth when Amy Poloff tripled home Michelle Fultz, then scored on a single from Kelly Barrett.
In the seventh, Red Devil shortstop Bree Skitsko appeared to score the Red Devil's third run of the game on a Fultz double, but was called out on appeal for missing third base.
Holly Clark singled home Fultz to make it 4-3, but Taylor came on in relief of Sarah Stokes (Towson, MD/Towson) and got Poloff to fly out to end the game.
Lisa von dem Hagen (Berwyn, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the game-two win and improve to 6-0 on the season.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 11 with a doubleheader at Albright. Game one starts at 3:30 p.m.
