GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Stef Mastropaolo (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) and Courtney Todd (Eagle, ID/Centennial) each went 3-for-5 on the day to help Gettysburg sweep a doubleheader, 8-0 and 6-1, from Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.
Mastropaolo went 3-for-3, including two RBI triples in game one while Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) and Todd each went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Jen White (Quakertown, PA/Pennridge) also went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
In addition, the two wins gave head coach Mike Kirkpatrick 200 for his coaching career.
Erin Taylor (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) fired a five-inning complete game in the opener while allowing two hits, one walk and striking out six to notch her team-leading ninth win of the season as the Bullets (17-4, 9-1 CC) erupted for three runs in the third inning and two in the fifth inning en route to an 8-0 win in game one.
Simmons reached first after being hit by a pitch, then scored on Mastropaolo's triple in the first inning.
White started the second inning with a double, advanced to third on Todd's single and scored on an RBI single by Simmons to make it 2-0.
Gettysburg then used three runs on three hits in the third inning to make it 5-0. Mastropaolo reached on a walk, moved to second on a single by Emily Boardman (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford), then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Todd.
Boardman scored on a sacrifice fly by Megan Procaccini (Ship Bottom, NJ/Peddie School) and Todd scored on an RBI single by Kristi Patterson (Margate, NJ/Atlantic City).
Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) reached on a one-out single in the fourth, stole second and scored on Mastropaolo's second RBI triple.
Jenna Pabst (Boonton Twp., NJ/Mountain Lakes) and Simmons would score the Bullets' final runs of game one as Wilson and Boardman each posted an RBI.
In game two, Swarthmore (1-17, 1-8 CC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Gettysburg tied it 1-all in the third, scored one in the fifth, then used four runs on two hits in the sixth to defeat the Garnet 6-1.
For Swarthmore, Heather Marandola reached on a walk in the first, moved to second on a passed ball, then went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by Gretchen Heitz to make it 1-0. The Bullets rallied back to tie the game 1-all on an RBI single by Simmons, scoring Pabst in the third inning.
Todd started the fifth inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Procaccini, then scored on an RBI single by Pabst to make it 2-1 and give Gettysburg the lead for good. Wilson, Boardman, White and Todd all scored in the sixth while Boardman and Todd each posted an RBI.
Lisa von dem Hagen (Berwyn, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) held the Garnet scoreless for the five innings and allowed only three hits while striking out four in six innings. Sarah Stokes (Towson, MD/Towson) pitched one inning allowing no hits and striking out one in the seventh.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 17 with a doubleheader at home against Lebanon Valley. Game one starts at 3:30 p.m.
