Bullets move closer to CCs top seed with 7-5 win over Washington

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) continued his return to All-America form on Saturday, this time at the expense of 15th-ranked Washington.

Slowed by a knee injury earlier in the year, the junior attackman scored a game-high four goals and added one assist to lead No. 2 Gettysburg past the Shoremen 7-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) action.

Since returning to full-time duty two weeks ago, Milliman has scored 14 goals and 10 assists in four games to put the Bullets on the brink of clinching the top seed in the CC playoffs.

Gettysburg (10-1, 4-0 CC) would host the four-team CC postseason tournament with a win against either Dickinson on Wednesday or Swarthmore next Saturday.  The semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Apr. 27 with the championship game slated for Sunday, Apr. 29.

Milliman set up Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) to open the scoring with 5.8 seconds left in the first quarter, then netted the tying and go-ahead goals in the second quarter to help the Bullets win their 26th straight CC game and fourth straight over Washington.

Craig Rentch notched a hat trick to lead the Shoremen (6-6, 3-2 CC) while Steve Berger picked up a pair of assists in the loss.

Goals from Nick Nylund and Rentch staked Washington to a 2-1 lead with 7:27 left in the second quarter before Gettysburg came back.

Milliman scored in traffic off a feed from Charlie Hanchett (Annapolis, MD/Stony Brook School [MD]) to knot the game at 2 with 4:49 left before halftime.

A little over three minutes later, Milliman picked up a loose ball after a scramble in front of the Washington net and whipped a sharp-angle shot past Shoreman goalie John Chrismer for a 3-2 Bullet lead with 1:37 remaining in the quarter.

Milliman completed the natural hat trick with 5:35 left in the third quarter.  Less than two minutes later, Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington) finished a solo move to the left of the goal to give Gettysburg a 5-2 edge heading into the final 15 minutes.

Eric Kuehn and Rentch netted extra-man goals 1 minute, 41 seconds apart early in the fourth to pull the Shoremen within 5-4 with 12:01 remaining.

Bullet goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) stopped Rentch in close with 10:04 left to maintain the one-goal margin before Milliman scored on a delayed penalty call for a 6-4 edge with 6:13 left.

Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) pushed the lead to 7-4 off of Hanchett's second assist of the game with 4:45 to play.

Rentch capped his hat trick with 32.1 seconds left, but John Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) won the ensuing faceoff to help the Bullets run out the clock.

McGinnis finished with 12 saves on the afternoon for Gettysburg.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 18 at home against Dickinson.  Game time is 4 p.m.
