Gettysburg hands Western Maryland its first loss in CC

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) singled home Jen White (Quakertown, PA/Pennridge) for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Gettysburg defeated Western Maryland 4-3 in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.

The Bullets (21-7, 12-3 CC) tied game two 7-all in the sixth inning, but the game was suspended due to darkness. The game could be resumed contingent upon the result of Ursinus' doubleheader at Muhlenberg on Tuesday night.

For Western Maryland (25-3, 14-1 CC), Selena Smart went 3-for-4, including a double and two runs scored while Samantha Abrams went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

In game one, the Bullets used a triple by White to lead off the eighth inning followed by back-to-back intentional walks to Courtney Todd (Eagle, ID/Centennial) and Megan Procaccini (Ship Bottom, NJ/Peddie School) to load the bases.

White then scored on a two-out single by Simmons to give Gettysburg the win and hand the Green Terror their first Centennial Conference loss of the season.

Gettysburg tied it 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning when Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) reached on a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Stef Mastropaolo (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford).

The Bullets took a 1-0 lead after one inning as Simmons scored on a wild pitch by Abrams, but Western Maryland rallied to tie it 1-all in the third inning as Smart scored on an error by Procaccini.

The Green Terror gained their first lead of the night when Kate Swierkos reached on an error by Emily Boardman (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) and then scored on an RBI double by Abrams to make it 2-1.

Gettysburg answered right back with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when White singled and scored on a single by Kristi Patterson (Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) to make it 2-2.

Western Maryland scored its final run of the game when Smart singled in the top of the seventh inning, went to third on a double by Lauren Henry and scored on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Wunderlich to make it 3-2.

Sarah Stokes (Towson, MD/Towson) fired eight innings while giving up nine hits and striking out four for the Bullets as she improves to 3-1 this season.
