GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Lauren Cramer ripped a two-run double with one out in the seventh inning to break a 2-all tie and lead Western Maryland past Gettysburg 4-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Thursday.
The loss drops the Bullets (21-8, 12-4 CC) to the fourth seedin this weekend's CC playoffs and a first-round rematch with the host Green Terror (28-4, 15-1 CC). Game time on Saturday is noon.
Samantha Abrams allowed two hits while fanning six to pick up the win, surrendering only one single after Gettysburg jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. She also scored two runs and doubled to lead off the game.
Mandy Wilson (McClure, PA/Indian Valley) and Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) managed the Bullets' only hits on the day. Lisa von dem Hagen (Berwyn, PA/Merion Mercy Acad.) allowed six hits and two earned runs over seven innings while taking the loss.
Gettysburg used opportune baserunning and a WMC throwing error to take a 2-0 lead in the first.
Jenna Pabst (Boonton Twp., NJ/Mountain Lakes) walked to lead off the frame, stole second and moved to third on a line drive off the bat of Simmons that Abrams knocked down for the first out.
Wilson reached first on a bunt, then started the Bullets' scoring play by breaking for second with two outs. Pabst scored when the throw to second sailed past second base and Wilson beat the throw home from centerfield to make it 2-0.
von dem Hagen held the Green Terror in check until the fifth inning when Candice Kuligowski and Abrams scored on a dropped pop fly with two outs to knot the game at 2.
Lauren Henry tripled to lead off the sixth, but was stranded to keep the game tied. In the seventh, however, Kristen Barrick ripped a one-out triple to start the game-winning rally and Abrams walked before Cramer drilled a two-run double to deep left for a 4-2 Western Maryland lead.
Abrams retired the heart of Gettysburg's batting order in the home seventh to lock up the win. Only Simmons managed a base hit in the final six innings for the Bullets, singling with two outs in the sixth to extend her team-best hitting streak to 14 games.
Gettysburg opens the CC playoffs on Saturday, Apr. 28 against host Western Maryland. Game time is noon. Ursinus and Muhlenberg will square off in the other first round game at 10 a.m.
