Bullets down Franklin & Marshall in CC semifinals, will face Ursinus for title

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) scored two goals and added two assists to lead ninth-ranked Gettysburg past No. 13 Franklin & Marshall 12-6 in the semifinals of the 2001 Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse tournament on Saturday at Ursinus.

The Bullets (13-3) will face the host Bears in the CC championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Ursinus downed Washington 10-7 in overtime in the day's other semifinal.

Bucha was one of six different Gettysburg players to score two goals on the afternoon, keeping the Bullets alive in their quest for a second consecutive CC title and berth in the NCAA tournament.

Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) tallied two goals and one assist for Gettysburg, which jumped on top 6-2, then outscored the Diplomats 6-1 in the second half to seal the win.

Laura Fine scored a game-high three goals for Franklin & Marshall (11-5), which fell to the Bullets for the second time in four days.

Despite never trailing on the afternoon, Gettysburg needed a second-half push to punch its ticket to the championship game.

Two goals from Casey Costello (Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina School) and two points apiece from Bucha, Murphy and Blankenship staked Gettysburg to a 6-2 lead 19 minutes, 10 seconds into the game before F&M scored three times in the final 3:21 to pull within 6-5 at halftime.

Jessica Seedorf (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Ward Melville) finished a slashing solo run to open the second-half scoring at 26:25 and Bucha made it 8-5 on a circling solo effort with 19:54 left in the game.

Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) scored off a scramble for a 9-5 lead at 17:35 before Fine capped her hat trick off an assist from Danielle Jones with 8:38 remaining to pull the Diplomats within three goals.

Blankenship answered 29 seconds later by finishing a midfield run off the ensuing draw control for a 10-6 lead.

Haugen netted her team-leading 40th goal of the season off a feed from Jess Hanson (Hunt Valley, MD/Maryvale Prep) at 6:05 and Bucha set up Murphy 19 seconds later to cap the scoring.

Gettysburg goalie Michele Centrella (Greenville, DE/Tatnall School) continued to play well in her return to the starting lineup, making nine saves on the afternoon.

Seedorf also finished with a pair of goals for the Bullets, who are seeking to avenge a 12-10 loss to Ursinus when the teams met on Mar. 24 in the regular season.

Jones finished with a goal and an assist for F&M.
