SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) scored four goals and Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) recorded a career-high 15 saves to lift seventh-ranked Gettysburg over Swarthmore 13-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
Bucha netted all four of her goals in the game's first 32 minutes to help the Bullets (7-2, 4-1 CC) build a 9-1 second-half lead en route to the win.
Borucki, a freshman making her second collegiate start, opened the game by stopping Swarthmore's Natania Kremer on a free-position shot in the first minute and didn't allow a Garnet goal until the 7:36 mark of the first half. In Borucki's first start on Thursday, Gettysburg held Haverford off the scoreboard for the game's first 24 minutes.
Jessica Seedorf (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Ward Melville) and Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) each score twice for the Bullets, who won convincingly despite being outshot 36-30 on the afternoon.
Katie Tarr led Swarthmore (4-4, 1-3 CC) with three goals and one assist.
After Borucki set the tone with her first save, Gettysburg scored four unanswered goals in the game's first 10:46 to take command.
Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) tallied her lone goal of the day off a feed from Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) to open the scoring at 27:59.
Seedorf made it 2-0 with a goal at 26:28 and Bucha converted a free-position attempt with 19:54 left in the opening half to force a Swarthmore timeout.
Forty seconds after that stoppage, Farrell finished a left-to-right run across the goal mouth to give the Bullets a 4-0 edge.
Borucki made four terrific saves over the next 12 minutes to keep the Garnet scoreless until the 7:36 mark when Mavis Biss scored on a bounce shot to pull Swarthmore within 4-1.
Bucha answered quickly with her second goal of the game at 6:38. On the ensuing draw control, Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills, East) took a pass from Murphy and finished her run to the goal to make it 6-1.
Bucha completed her hat trick with 3:42 left in the first half and gave Gettysburg an 8-1 lead with a free-position goal 1:46 into the second half. Katie Merriken (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored in traffic with 24:12 left to cap the Bullets' 9-1 run.
Tarr broke the Swarthmore scoring drought with 22:19 remaining, but Seedorf and Murphy scored goals 1:06 apart to give Gettysburg an 11-2 lead with 20:31 and force another Garnet timeout.
Casey Costello (Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina School) added a goal for the Bullets while Michele Centrella (Greenville, DE/Tatnall School) made five saves in the game's final nine minutes in relief of Borucki.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 10 at home against second-ranked College of New Jersey, the defending NCAA Division III champions. Game time is 4 p.m.
