WESTMINSTER, Md. – Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) scored a team-high four goals and added one assist to help second-ranked Gettysburg overcome a two-goal third-quarter deficit and defeat Western Maryland 14-10 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Milliman, who has tallied 19 points in his last three games, collected two goals and one assist during a 5-0 run that helped the Bullets (9-1, 3-0 CC) turn an 8-6 deficit into an 11-6 lead with 13:57 remaining in the game.
Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) added both of his goals during the crucial stretch as Gettysburg won its 25th consecutive CC game. Goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made 14 saves and allowed only three goals after halftime.
Joe Ellis scored a game-high five goals for the Green Terror (6-3, 2-1 CC), who were attempting to defeat CC rivals Gettysburg and Washington in the same season for the first time in program history. WMC downed the Shoremen 15-14 on Wednesday.
Green Terror attackman Tom Brown, the sixth-leading goal-scorer in Division III at 4.29 per game, was held to a single tally to go along with two assists in the loss.
Western Maryland jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the game's first quarter-and-a-half and led 8-6 with 11:15 left in the third before the Bullets roared back.
Cadman scored unassisted at the 9:09 mark of the third to start the run and Milliman tied the game at 8 off a feed from Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington) a mere 33 seconds later.
Milliman set up Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) at 4:48 to put Gettysburg ahead to stay and Cadman made it 10-8 with a goal at the 2:39 mark.
Milliman netted his final goal of the day with 13:57 left to cap the run and give the Bullets an 11-8 lead.
Brown pulled the Green Terror within 11-9 at 12:51, but Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, MD/Woodberry Forest [VA]) sandwiched a pair of goals around a marker from teammate Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) to give the Bullets an insurmountable 14-9 advantage with six minutes to play.
Behind two goals from Milliman in the game's first four minutes, Gettysburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Ellis answered with two goals and Brett Sweeney scored from Brown to even the game at 3 by the end of the first 15 minutes.
